Default confused newly wed

To anyone out there that can help !!! I am a newly wed just back from the states .... obviously I need to get out there and find work but having a few issues with doing so ... in the US we have the SSN (or equivalant) that is required for anyone to be able to work ... my hubby tells me that I need to get the UK equal to an SSN ... how? where?

We opted to leave my last name as is until I am able to get full time status here ... after reading some of the posts ... boy am I happy about that ... sounds like a lot more expense and more headaches than what we just went through ... thanks for any advise I can get.... ~nyx~

I do not know what type of tax numbers you will need. Are you a citizen? A resident? Or, just a visitor? You could ask your potential employer, because they will be able to tell you what they need.

Thank you ... probably best that I go through a potential employer .... I am a US citizen on leave to remain to remain in the UK for two years on a spousal visa ... so I would have to say .... I'm not quite a vistor nor am I a citizen ... just another one of those grey areas.

Are a grey area person (I have a work permit) you need a National Insurance number (NI number) which is sort of like a SSN - your taxation gets tracked by it as well.
When I applied 6 years ago, you had to do it in person at the social security office closest to you - though it can take weeks to get through on the phone, then several weeks to get an appointment. Persevere, because you need this number to work (though you can start work without it - they give you an 'emergency tax code' which means you are charged at a slightly higher rate because you are not 'known' - don't panic, you get the extra tax back in the first pay packet after you have provided your NI number.
Have a look at this link, it should tell you everything you need to know:

Phenyx I have only been surfing these forums myself since yesterday and I've only found truly helpful people, information, and ideas...though reading mention of the crime rate being so "high" over there kind of made me nervous...guess it is a good thing my son made it to green leader belt in karate before we had to pull him out huh!?!?!?
