Default mobiles

Hi Guys,

I just moved to Edinburgh, what a long trip, and I am shopping for a mobile. I was wondering if anyone might be able to give me some advice concerning which mobile companies are good in the area? I'm from the US, so I'm unfamiliar with all but a couple companies, and have no idea which, if any, have better service in Edinburgh.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

I've had good coverage in the City with both T-Mobile (Mobile phones deals & Mobile Broadband from T-Mobile - Official Site) and O2 (O2 ? The UK's Leading Provider of Mobile Phones & Broadband). Orange, Vodafone, 3 and Virgin are the other main providers in the UK.

I would go into a branch of Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U or The Link and they should have a price comparison table in store of the current prices. I'm not sure whether you'll be able to get a contract mobile until you have been in the country a while and have a fixed UK address and bank account so you'll be more likely limited to Pay As You Go (PAYG) which is slightly more expensive.

Also depending on whether you already have a Tri-Band (US use 1900MHz GSM and we use 900 & 1800MHz) phone you may only need to get the SIM card to use in your current phone. I know in the states though that you don't all use GSM and so that might not work.

The guys in the shop will know anyway.

Hope this helps, Edinburgh is a beautiful city and the castle offers some beautiful panoramas, what a nice place to live.

Hiya!

You can look at the UK relocation advise / cultural training website site Culture Class who has some free information regarding mobile phones (and landlines, tv, etc.).

You can access some of the free content here:
Culture Class: Cost of Mobiles

Cheers,
Morten

go for 3G network pay as you go, its the cheapest network with good coverage, other networks are a rip off

3 does seem to have a pretty good deal, but you definitely pay more for pay-as-you-go than their monthly plans. I think this is pretty much universal? It seems like getting a pay monthly plan will take just about forever though, just getting a bank account is going to take a full 2 weeks, plus 10 days more to get a credit card a mobile company will accept (the bank is telling me that no one will accept my US credit card?)

The price on pay-as-you-go is just horrific though, so I'm very frustrated at the moment.

T-Mobile seems to be a bit better deal than most of the others, and 3 a little better than them, at least for contracts, so I'm leaning toward one of those. Hearing good things about T-Mobile coverage in Edinburgh, how is 3 in the area?

Thanks,
Elizabeth
