Default Work and part-time MBA degree

Hi guys,

I really need yr recomendation. I will be moving to London soon to start a new job. At the same time i'm going to take up part-time MBA.

About me:

I have 2 yrs of working experience in Singapore, but i'm a citizen of one of the former Soviet republics, where i also did my first degree. I'm in my early 20-s.

I need to choose decent recognised Univercity, which offers part-time degree.
Most of the high-ranked Uni-s (Oxford, Cambridge) are located outside of London, which is not possible for me since i'm going to work in London and i need smth there.
I was looking at LBS, but i think my chances to get there are quiet low, considering my age and lack of experience

So, any recomendations on Uni-s are much appreciated.

Why should your age and lack of experience stop you from studying? UK universities are open to everybody over the age of 18. There is no upper age. If you already have a degree and you have relevant certifcates to show, then you should be able to do a part-time Masters, which normally takes two years. London is full of Universities - just google them.

The only hurdle you might run into, is the cost. If you are classed as an overseas student, then it can be very expensive.

Good luck with your plans and I am sure you will be able to find a University.

Michelle

One possibility might be to discuss your plans with your new employer. Some employers may be willing to sponsor or subsidize your studies toward an MBA, and they may have information about the schools where their employees have done their degrees on a part time basis.

In some cases, if they pay for your schooling, they may expect you to continue working for them for some period of time (usually a year or two) after you complete your degree. If you decide to change jobs before that time is up, you may be expected to reimburse the employer for part of the fees they paid on your behalf.

It's a very common arrangement in some larger companies and worth looking into if you're interested in doing an MBA.
Cheers,
Bev

I will be working in Basildon, Essex, so i need to choose the Uni in London or nearby to start my part-time MBA.

Any comments on Warwick Biz School, Cranfield BS; City Uni CAAS; or Imperial College London Tanaka? Does anyone study there? Or any other Unis to recommend?

The other concern is that i have only 2 years of work experience; most of the programmes require at least 4-5 years; are they strict about work experience?

I could took up any of the Master programmes, where i don't need to have much experience; but i would really better skip that stage and try to enter MBA programme.

In general, any comments on usual Master programmes? Or should i try to enter MBA programme insted? More valuable?

All comments and advises are welcome. I'm so thrilled to move there, but just a little bit worried as it usually happens.
thanks for yr support and advises

As you are going to be working in Basildon, you might want to look at universities in that direction. University of East Anglia and the University of East London. You would probably save money by not having to travel into London.

Regards

Michelle

Default MBA in England

I did my p/t MBA at the Open University. They're very flexible as to how you carry out your studies, which tutorials you attend (around the country and abroad) and, what's more, they're well respected, fully accredited and relatively cheap (since you're not paying the standard overheads of a brick-and-mortar uni)!

The only thing that I would comment on is that I found my work experience particularly useful when studying as it helps apply everything in context rather than an abstract theory. Otherwise you may well quickly forget theories/ concepts/ models/ ideas because they're not applicable to you - this would be a waste of your money and time...

What I'm trying to say is that you may benefit more from your MBA once you have a few more years work experience in a management function.

I actually used my MBA to change career, work out a business strategy and open up my own web shop....

good luck!

Julia
