Default How to tell when a primary school is public or private?

I have been using Rightmove as recommended on this forum (thanks) and it is really cool how they list the schools near a residence on the map. How can I tell whether these schools are public (free) or private (tuition)?

As a general rule, in the US any parochial school or school with a religious name is definitely private, ergo really expensive. I don't think this rule applies in London.

Thanks for any advice.

Lester

Hi Lester and welcome to the forum.

Rightmove is a great site, which is why we always recommend it.

Firstly, public schools in the UK are known as state schools, so be careful, because exclusive schools like Eton, Harrow and Rugby are known as public schools - totally different ends of the spectrum........

There are many religious schools in the UK which are state run, although some of them are known as voluntary aided, which means you pay (if you can) a small amount to the school each month.

Once you have chosen where you plan to live, then go to the relevant local council online, which lists all the state schools within their area. If you tell me where you are planning on living, I can give you the website you need.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Michelle

Fantastic! Thanks. As a test, I was able to find the website for the Kensington local authority and browsed their list of schools. So all of these schools on their list are state run, and thus free, right?

I have a work permit, so I believe we qualify for state education.

Thanks!
