You normally get 6 months stamped in your passport. But if you say to the immigration officer on arrival you want to stay that long, they will almost certainly ask you to produce evidence that:
a) you have enough funds to support yourself without working;
b) you have an outline itinerary - what you intend to do in UK and where;
c) you have a return or onward ticket out of UK;
d) you have a compelling reason to return home, such as job, evidenced by a letter from your employer say.
So the fact is that even if you say you are only staying for a week, you still get 6 months and you are legally allowed to stay that long, in spite of what you may have told the immigration official. Make sure you have documentary evidence on you to back up your story, such as recent bank statements, booked accommodation, return ticket and letter from employer, just in case.
