Lightbulb So egar to work for the UK Boarder agency..But.....

I would like to work for the UK boarder agency, but i have noticed that most of the advertised jobs on its website require candidates to be living in the uk for the last continuous 3 years prior to the date of application.

bearing in mind that I have been living in the Uk since 2002 but went away for the last 2 years and just got back last march.

so the question is, would the UKBA consider anybody with my case to work for it??

would appreciate if anyone has a clue about it at all?

thank you so much

This would indicate that for most positions with them you need to have lived in the UK for the 3 years before you apply. For some positions they require that you be a UK citizen as well. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ab...areyoueligible.

I have no idea how flexible they are on any of those requirements, but considering who they are, my instinct is that they are probably quite strict.

I wanted to work for them too, but there's no way they'll consider me for at least 4 years (as I am sadly not from an EU country). Who knows, maybe I'll still want to do it then...

Best wishes,
Elizabeth

Frankly, after going through the whole visa thing, I would be qualified! And as a person that has done everything the legal way I'm really motivated to keep people honest so that those who are honest won't have to deal with people looking at them with suspicion due to all of the fraud.

Oh well, I think I'd be great at it and would certainly be dedicated to helping those that SHOULD get in find a way and those that SHOULDN'T find the door... but I'll just have to wait I guess.

BTW, it's UK BORDER Agency, part of Home Office. Boarder Agency conjures up an image of someone skilled in winter sports, or trying to place hapless students or tourists in less-than-ideal accommodation!

As for working for them, they are in civil service (i.e. part of UK national government) so unless in very specialised, technical positions, almost all staff must be either British citizens, Commonwealth citizens with the right of abode or, in some cases, EU/EEA or Swiss nationals. You used to be obliged to pledge an oath of allegiance to the Queen (as you'll be working for HM government), but perhaps with the expansion of EU, such requirement may not be absolute. Much more important is the question of security screening, as you must have a long recent UK residence history in order for them to have something to investigate (despite recent revelations of illegal immigrants working as contract staff to UKBA, but not as full employees). It would be impossible to screen you if you've lived the past 5 years in Timbaktu!

Thanks Joppa for the info!

sorry I just realized that I have mis-spelt it as well as eager..! and that's what I am talking about..if I have been living over here for quite a while excluding the 2 year gap, why wouldn't the residing period get taken in consideration from 2002?..and does that mean that I have to still live 2 more years in the UK to be considered then, as the previous time I used to live here(from 2002 till 2007) will be ignored?

hopefully, you got my point!

BTW, why would it be impossible to screen any comers from Timbaktu???

thank you

Because UK government has no automatic access to record - criminal or otherwise - outside of UK and in any case it would be quite difficult to assess the national security implication of such data as available from a foreign source, its reliability, admissibility etc.
