Default moving to the UK for 1 yr in 2010

Hello,

We plan to move from the Netherlands to the UK for 1 year, or actually one school year (=10 months) during the academic yr 2010-2011. We'll probably go in August and return in June, that way our two children, now 4 and 6, will miss only one entire year in the Dutch system.

Reason for moving is a sabattical year of my husband. We chose Bath, because that's an interesting place from his professional PoV (he is an academic), plus we have lived there already for 18 months before we had kids ('97-'98).

I myself am an independent video maker, I do mainly corporate stuff, and plan to work in the UK as well, although I probably will not be able to work as much as I can here.

Right now we are looking at
- the right place to live: Bath itself is fantastic, but costly, on the other hand we could perhaps let our house here
- more information on the school system: how does it work for children age 6-8?
- more information on after school care: now they go to an after school care 3-4 days p/w. How does this work in the UK?

I will need more information on being an independent professional in the UK as well. I think I should be able to transport my company quite easily to the UK since it's EU, but what would I need in the way of permits?

Best regards,
Irene

Starting a company in the UK is very simple and takes only a few days, all you need is two people (director and secretary), the main problem may be to obtain a business bank account in a British bank.

Many UK accountancy firms will have "turn key" companies already created, which they will transfer to you, thus saving you most of the hassle.

Any good accountant should be able to advice if it is better to use your Dutch company or one incorporated in the UK, in any case you would be lialbe to UK tax for maybe a couple of years (2009 and 2010).
