Hi, there.

Any Canadians on here living in Bristol? I just moved to the UK two weeks ago from Toronto and would love to chat with fellow Canucks residing here.

Well, I really do like Bristol. And the people here are quite friendly. The only thing that bothers me is how much the average Brit wants to leave their country permanently. Even people who weren't born here want to get out as fast as they can. I don't see what they're talking about. The one thing that I will say about this country though is that it's INCREDIBLY RACIST. White Brits are really pissed about non European foreigners. And they are very open about it. It's quite shocking. However, in all fairness to them, a huge percentage of the foreigners who do come here make ZERO attempt to adapt to the British way of life. In Canada, most foreigners try to blend in a bit, but not so much over here. I guess it's their revenge against the British Empire.

Right, I agree with your post. When I tell Brits here that I am moving to the UK they say, "are you crazy!" I love England, the culture, the people, even the weather.

Yes you're right on that note. We brits are pretty much like that and the impression we give you seems to be true. People pretty much like to move out of this country and live elsewhere for the main obvious reasons. Too much crime happens in here for starters, weather, the government etc.

I'd have to agree with the above in terms of peoples attitudes towards non europeans. Especially for a 'multicultural' country. It's normall preceeded with a i'm not racist BUT...more so in regards to the high amount of Somali's in Bristol since they are so visible and tend to stick to themselves. Then again most would be 1st generation.

I like England as it's different and the close proximity to Europe and North America/Africa for travel despite red tape and crime, however have to disagree with the weather it's quite terrible compared to Australia

I'm am actually here with my wife since she took a work transfer here for 2 years.

I like Bristol though, the English sure love Australia!

I think there are quite a few Aussies in London but not many here in Bristol. Some of The British do admire the Aussie immigration policies though.

I've heard quite a few Canadian accents around Bristol, I assumed it was something to do with International students.

Sorry for thread hijack...

I see! Well for me Australia doesn't really do it for me. I'm sure its a wonderful country and i'm pretty sure it beats the UK in every department. The only thing that puts me off from Australia is the distance and the incredible heatwave and not to mention the creepy creatures you get. I wouldn't mind visiting Australia to see what the big deal is but it isn't certainly on the lists to must see. But you're right that MOST brits would love to live and work in Australia as I think the lifestyle and weather plays a major factor.

I've never been to Bristol before but I'm assume its pretty much like any other major city in the UK such as Manchester.

Nope. Bristol isn't industrial, like most other big UK cities. That's why I chose it. It's isolated in the South West, and in many ways it feels like we're 'out in the country'. There are no high rise buildings and we're in a valley surrounded by green rolling hills. There's also a thriving artistic community here, which I love. I've been here for two months and been really surprised by the amount of sun. It's not quite as exciting as London, but it's much easier to live in.
