Default Brits Abroad

I read on the a website that the british behave like crazy animals abroad with the whole alcohol consumption. I have to say its 100% correct and I'm british myself. It hurts to hear things like these but british people in general behave like they don't give a toss when you're always suppose to respect the locals.

Just like to know what you guys think of this, thanks!!

Yes it is a shame that the few spoil it for us abroad. Twice, since being in Spain I have asked groups of people to tone down there language, One group was a rugby gang, lol, the other was a mixed group of teenages. It made me cringe, waiting at the bustop, when the worst offender was f...ing and a c...ing at the top of her voice. This was during the daytime so alcohol not an issue ( I don't think!). I really let rip at them. Not a word out of them after that! I suppose I was lucky coz I was on my own at the time, just me and these rowdy, young brits.

But it's not ALL the British and that's what has to be remembered here.

When in Benidorm over Christmas some years ago we actually avoided a lot of British places (since it seemed it was the season for a lot of drunken, loud Brits to be there). Once we avoided them we had a great time!

Regards,
Karen

Yeah i completely agree! Some idiots abroad do act like complete animals and I think it is so unfair to the locals. I have always been bought up to respect everybody but especially those who live in a different country. I by no way act like this and if I did i would only embarassed myself. When I do go on holiday I will always avoid the british hotspots such as Spain, Greece etc. Anyway those holidays really don't appeal to me.

It also happens here a lot in the UK but people just don't seem to care.

It is unfortunate that the mindless few give us all a bad name.
I constantly find myself apologising to the locals here for the behaviour of my fellow Brits. There are times when I am ashamed to admit to being British and that is a shame. We should all be able to wear our country of origin as a badge of pride but sadly these days it is no longer so.
Another thing that annoys me is the total lack of disrespect some Brits on holiday show for the local sensitivity on certain matters. Cypriots (especailly the older generation are offended by half naked bodies wandering around the streets but you see women is scanty bikini tops and tiny shorts and men with huge guts hanging over their shorts with no T shirts on. I have to bite my tongue not to tell them what I think. Yuk

Hi ChungyUK ..... It cant be 100% correct, otherwise that would mean ALL Brits travelling overseas would be doing it and they arent!!! I agree that some Brits abroad behave appallingly - but most dont. I live here in Spain and do see it particularly in the more touristy resorts in high summer .... but then I see it from other nationalities too ....I live in a predominantly Spanish town (largish town) and there are some pretty rowdy and obnoxious Spanish youngsters some weekends who could give the Brits a run for their money .... but I try to focus on the positive the HUGE MAJORITY are just getting on with their lives and not hurting or upsetting anybody .....

Well i wouldn't know if spanish youngsters behave like they do in Spain but I don't think you could compare to our UK counterparts....no competition whatsoever.

But its true why do so many british people have to drink themselves silly when you simply dont have to have a good time. I mean other countries like to drink too but they drink sensibly. I just cant imagine seeing a french or a spanish person acting like a fellow brit would do in the UK. It would be unheard of. You can have a good time whether you drink or not. But why drink yourself so silly that you have to puke everywhere and act like a idiot and being abusive.

What I don't get is why do some British go abroad just to eat and drink and socialise in British-style places. What is the point of that? I love trying new food and experiencing new things, its my reason for going abroad.

I remember hearing a discussion about this a long time ago and one suggestion was that Brits didn't tend to drink at home and so as soon as they could they were out drinking with their mates (and that's men and women). Some European countries like Spain and France tend to drink wine with their meals and so are brought up with alcohol so it doesn't seem like such a big thing to them.

My Dad and Grandfather ran a nightclub in the 60's in London and I've been told that I was drunk at the age of 4 yrs old (people saying ah isn't she cute would you like to try this drink!). I don't remember it! However I was brought up around alcohol and it was no big deal when I was allowed to go out and drink in a pub.

I have been very drunk on a couple of occasions and didn't like it so I've not done it since

I think what amazes me is that people get drunk, often throw up, do stupid things, feel awful in the morning and then decide that they want to do it all over again! I don't understand that!

Regards,
Karen
