Default moving to london dec 2009/jan 2010

Hello everyone

I am planning to move to London once I have finished Matric at the end of this year. I have a British passport so that won't be an issue. The idea is to rent a room somewhere and work as a waitress, or any job I can find. Then, in September, I’d like to start studying.

I’d like to know if this is a realistic plan or if the economic crisis, my age (18) or something else will make this impossible. Is it difficult to find waitressing, au pair jobs etc. and what do these kinds of jobs pay?

Thanks

Those jobs will pay you a minimum wage, which for young people like you is even lower (for some reason the government thinks that young people, that is under 21, should earn less), but of course YMMV. If you are intending to wait tables here, it would help you if you gain experience before coming here, that would put you ahead of other applicants.

Your plan sound typical of what many students do, but you should have a plan B since it is very likely that we could be in a deep recession by those dates, so keep an eye in UK financial news (I know, boring, but believe me, that will give you a feeling about how easy it would be to get a job here).

Have you thought about teaching English? Loads of language schools and foreign students in the UK, especially London. Anway, it's food for thought.

As the poster is a student and wanting to study in the Uk I hardly think he/she would be qualified at 18 yo to teach anything.
