Default Expat on Tier 2 - what are my choices to stay long term?

I have been here in the UK as an expat from the US with my company (in IT) for 2 years on a Tier 2 sponsored work visa. I want to remain here permanently and also want the flexibility to work for another company. I also want to purchase property here. I believe that my 2 choices are:

1) Try to qualify for a Tier 1 work visa (which looks to be difficult as a. I do not have £1M to invest and b. my profession is not on the specialised list)

OR

2) Get a permanent transfer with my company here in the UK

Are my assumptions correct? Are there any other ways around this?

To get settlement, you have to be on an eligible visa for 5 years. (2) may be a better option, if you can extend your visa for 3 more years. Or marriage/partnership.
