my wife who is British by birth (born in 1978 in the UK) though never lived in the UK as an adult. Would she be eligible for NHS coverage if she moved to the UK? As a spouse if by some miracle we live through the draconian hoops of the new law would I be able to get it?

Is it just me or is the UK becoming more conservative like the US? How rampant is it

If you and your wife move to the UK and are legally and permanently living there, then you both will be eligible for the NHS.

Don't know what you mean by "is the UK becoming more conservative like the US" - at least folks who are legally and permanently living in the UK become eligible for the NHS, unlike the US where you still have to qualify to obtain health insurance - and if you don't you live in fear of bankruptcy with your first illness.

I note that you say that your wife has never lived in the UK as an adult - presume she has never worked in the UK? Still does not prevent her from using the NHS (paid largely by British taxpayers) if and when she moves back ; and you have never lived/worked there, but, hey, even you can access it.

The new law is not draconian - its merely expecting people moving to the UK to be able to support themselves.

There are some exceptions, at least that is what I understand; until you or she is working in the UK, you will be charged for hospital care, but most standard care will be covered right away.

I apologize for implying its as bad there as it is here. Also draconian may be the wrong word. Just seems like it puts a lot of pressure on the partner that is the UK citizen to be the means of support. I have never been on any public assistance in the US and dont plan to anywhere else.

Tough on immigration or the "round em up and shoot em" mentality is rampant ere in the US and you are right there is no healthcare except for the rich or super poor

There IS healthcare for all in the US - once you are in the system you probably get some of the best treatment in the world.

Its getting in that's the problem - having to go through the gatekeeper called the insurance company and then, if you neither qualify for lower premiums or Medicaid, having to pay huge premiums each month for the "privilege"

Exactly. And the insurance companies exist to make money not to provide healthcare.
This issue is one of many that are making us think of moving out of the USA
