Hi All,

I think I know the answer to this but just want to make sure!

My husband is here on a fiancé visa, we are waiting for the outcome
Of our spouse visa application.

Today I received my right to vote registration....is my husband elegible to vote?

I'm assuming he can't until he's a British Citizen.

Does anyone know?

Xx

It isn't as simple as whether your husband has Britsh citizenship!
Irish and Commonwealth citizens (with leave or indefinite leave) can vote in all elections.
EU citizens (but not citizens of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland) can vote in local and European elections but not parliamentary election.
British citizens can vote in all elections.

Hi Joppa / Bailey,

It did mention that qualifying commonwealth citizens could vote but then there was another section that seemed to contradict itself and I didn't understand.

Hopefully we will have a decision on FLR soon. If / when this is granted can he vote? I'm assuming he can't vote on his fiance visa?

My husband is Australian, I'm not sure if I mentioned that.

Thanks all.

x

As a Commonwealth citizen, he needs a leave that allows him to stay longer than 6 months so, no, he can't register to vote on fiancé visa but can with FLR.
