Default under points threshhold for 175 visa but cant work out why?

I have submitted my information for the 175 visa only to find out that i have come up 5 points short to qualify, i cant understand this im a bricklayer with 25 years experience fully qualified with english as my first language, no criminal record etc, i am on the required workers list and that has credited me another 60 points but so im baffled as to why ive not made the grade, im 41 years of age and my wife is 40 we are under the minimim age, and going by all acounts this should not be a factor that would get in the way of our application. again we are baffled?? we origonaly had intended to apply for the 176 visa as we have family in melbourne but only just found out that a cousin does not count as an eligable relative, he is married to an australin we were wondering if there is any discretion in just who meets the criteria as a qualifying relative or is that cut and dried?? the way we are looking at it is, that if we dont qualify for the visa, being on the migrant in demand list with so much experience, then how does anyone else qualify ?? and we know that other people are being accepted in the same circumstances as us?? so whats our problem??is there mabey something that we are not getting correct on the form? mabey less points for the fact that we are not married?? we have now had to explore being sponsred by the australian goverment but we are not sure if this will be succesfull can anyone give us any info about how usefull this is??.. and if there is anyone out there who has any idea why ive not met the points criteria for 175 visa id be realy happy to have there input, we have not sent our application in yet and dont want to spend a lot of money to get fobbed off. i cant tell you how dissapointed we feel we thought we would be a sure thing.. we make the pool mark but we dont want to be in limbo if we can help it..
thanks paul

Hi JockoPaul,

Not sure why you didnt get it. I assume you added the points correctly prior to application. I have read on here that you can get 10 extra points by successfully passing the IELTS test. This is an international english language test. The fact you are a UK national (Scottish i assume from your handle) will have already earned you 15 points. This is the Australian way of giving preference to fluent English speakers who may fall just short. I know it seems strange that you can get 10 more points for proving you know the mother tongue but at least it's a way of making up the deficit. Sadly, i cannot help you further as i didn't need to do the test (sister sponsored us).

If there is anything specific you have done in your job (such as stonemasonry) you may be able to get a company to sponsor you. This will get you the extra points, however the company would have to prove that you offer something that the local labour market cannot so take at look at your skillset to see if there is something you specialize in and approach companies from that angle.

Hope this has helped andthe very best of luck,

SC.

hi paul

think it has something to do with your age as the older you are the less points you get even though your still under the cut off age of 45

there was only 15 points if you are over forty, but what is the point of having the cut of age of 45 we haved scored max points for trade etc so its a pitty that my age has been such a crucial part of making up the points doesnt seem fair if you can think of any way of making the points up please let me know
cheers paul

Hi Paul,

As SC suggested, you could gain extra points for doing the IELTS exam.

I'd recommend you contact a couple of migration agents and see what they have to say. The first consultation is usually free, without obligation. There are a few agents who post on here so you could PM them for their advice. I'm positive they'll come up with something.

Hiya Paul

What you need to do is have a job offer before to go to Australia, this will give you the extra 5 points. You can still go for the 175 if you do this. We are going through an agent and i am applying for a 175 as we speak!!! We are 40 and 41 so understand where you are coming from. You need to have a job offer but you don't need to take the post when you get there you just need the offer, hope this helps!

BUT - I just have a question here, it seems kinda hard getting a job offer, when you look at seekit you will be seeing this
Only people with the right to work in Australia may apply for this position. In every search you make.
I find it difficult to think that, unless you know someone, getting a job offer OR a sponsorship is really hard.
But maybe I'm wrong ?

Hope the best for you, we are in our ACS right know, so we are still looking forward to a long time of waiting.

Hiya Mette

I only know thats the way to go if applying for nursing/midwifery posts. I have three friends who all have job offers and haven't yet left the country. But hey what do i know perhaps your right!! I am going through an agent and they said they will let me know when to apply for a job, so i haven't yet applied for any yet. I have however spoken to Mater hospital in Brisbane and they informed me that once i am on the ANMC and state register i will be able to apply, so i hope this is right
