Default Got job offer in Perth

Hello there expats,

I have been offered a job with 457 visa (Pipeline Engineer - oil & gas) in Perth with salary package of 100k inclusive of super plus other benefits such as profit sharing and bonus.

I am just wondering if the figure is about right for a 4-5 years experience pipeline engineer in Perth.

Also, with that salary, will i be living a decent life with my wife in Perth? I know this question is too general, but i just wanted to know roughly.

I will be working in CBD Perth, which suburb is recommended to be lived in? considering transportation to/from CBD everyday and also not far from facilities.

With LAFHA is taken away next year, any comment ?

I can't comment if the salary is competive in that industry but $100K a year in certainly enough money to afford a nice rented house in the suburbs close to the beach, and in my opinon live comfortably. It really depends what you judge to be a comfortable living.

Perth has really good public transportation system that makes getting in and out of the CBD very easy. Have a look at the areas bordering the main trainlines on one of the property sites like www.domain.com.au to get an idea what you'll be able to afford.

What type of area do you want to live in? e.g Somewhere like Subiaco offers lots of entertainment on your doorstep whilst Sorento and the coastal northern suburbs have great beachers. Are schools important to you?

Thanks for the tips Marcus.

I am thinking to rent a 2-3 bed rooms house + 1 car park with 400-500 per week. Still haven't decide on which area to live in though. Schools are not important for me as it will be me and my wife only. As long as the area is not far from my workplace and easy access to groceries stores, banks, etc.

Subiaco seems to be a good choice.

Northern suburbs seem to be far from CBD though.

What about victoria park and claremont?

Claremont is very nice, it has a new chic shopping centre called the Claremont quarter with lots of nice stores, and good selection of restaurants and other facilities, banks , a Coles for groceries. It's also not to far from Subiaco or Cottesslo and just a short trip to Freemantle either by car or train. A really nice location I've always thought.

I'm afraid I haven't been to East Victoria park so can't tell you much about that area.

Just to add to that, eating and drink out in Perth can be more expensive than other cities. Some examples in my experience

A latte or other coffee averages $4-$6
A glass of draught beer (pint) - $9-$12
A glass of wine -$8-$10
An average entree - $25+

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, i have heard about how expensive Perth is, and that is why i am worried my salary package would not be enough.

Is short term accommodation easily available? I am allowed to stay in short term once i arrived in Perth for 1 month max. Since i am provided with $3000AUD for my mobilization allowance (including flight tickets and temporary accommodation allowance for 1 month), i need to get somewhere cheap (of course with internet access) and easy for me to go around to check out other long term accommodation.

Congrats Mate.

100k AUD is not bad and if you are gonna live in CBD the house rents might cost you 2000 AUD Per month (500 per week).

Post Tax i assume you can get 80K AUD in hand roughly.

Cheers.

firebomber, could you tell me a bit about your employment and visa process?
I am an engineer with 5 years experience in the electric utility business in new york and have recently decided that it's time to go. However, I am unsure of what to do next, get a visa, apply for jobs, both? How did you go about from deciding to go to getting the job offer? btw, what kind of work experience do you have?
Thanks for any tips!

Nilsonov,

I am a 5 years Exp. Oil & Gas Pipeline Engineer.
Normally for Oil & Gas jobs, it is much easier as there are numurous recruitment consultant ie. head hunters around the world. There are also websites that only post oil & gas jobs around the world. So what i have done is posted my CV in one of the websites and thats where all the headhunters checkout my CV and contacted me.
For mine case, the employer will sponsor me for the visa, that is sub class 457, which means my visa is tied to that employer until i apply for PR (again which needs nomination by employer).
You can also apply for visa subclass 175 (independent skilled worker) if i am not mistaken, which has more stringent requirement i think. So that with this visa, you can apply for jobs around Aus.
