Default Mechanical Engineer considering US to Australia move

I'm new to the forum; currently living in the US. Last year, I spent a month and a half in various parts of Australia on business, and absolutely fell in love with everything; people, culture, places, climate, etc. Haven't stopped thinking about it since I left. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about getting a job and emigrating to Australia.

I'm a mechanical engineer (BSME from an accredited university well known in industry) with a few years of experience in the design and production of heavy equipment for the mining and petroleum industries. Back in college, I participated in undergraduate research working on a couple robotic excavators.

I've looked into the requirements for a visa, and I'm not too concerned with qualifying for one, independent or sponsored. What kind of chance do I have of finding a job in Australia? What sort of salary range would be considered reasonable?

Thanks in advance!
