Default Offered job in Australia, FX advisory role

Hi all,

I know this has been asked several different ways before but I am struggling to pin down an exact answer to my question, I'm hoping that someone here might be able to shed some light.

I currently work for an investment management firm in London. A former colleague of mine (Australian working in London) has been in touch and offered me a permanent job in Sydney within his team of foreign exchange consultants. Now, I know that I would be able to work there for 6 months on a WH visa no problems, and the company is happy to sponsor me for a longer-term visa, but I'm unsure whether or not I would qualify for a 457 as the role isn't on the desirables list the government is looking for.

I graduated with a degree in maths in 2008, and since then have been working in the financial industry, so I have ~3 years' experience. If someone could tell me my chances given the fact that the company are willing to sponsor me based on the fact that I'm pretty good at what I do, that would be great.

Thanks, JK

Hi JK,

Congrats on d job offer. For 457 no government preferred list selection is needed. It purely depends. on the employer requirement and their nature of business. If employer is willing to sponsor you the visa then,in a month or in two months time...you will get visa inhand...which is valid for four years and you can work with the same employer... :-)

Great news, thanks a lot Maddy. So in order to save the potential 2 month delay, I could go out there on a WH visa, then I'd have 6 months to get the sponsorship ball rolling and pushed through (I understand you can apply for 457 whilst in Oz).

What was confusing for me was on the immigration website where it states under the subclass 457 visa:

'This visa is for employers who would like to employ overseas workers to fill nominated skilled positions in Australia.'

If someone who has successfully been granted a 457 in the financial industry could confirm this that would be great.

Thanks a lot for your help, all the best JK

I would recommend you to file the visa with the employer and then move as you are gonna make a.permanent shift from UK to OZ...

WH visa to 457 bridging im not too sure about the conditions...you may check with DIAC now before proceeding with any actions ..to be on a safer side...

Good Luck. Cheers...

I will definitely check however I'm pretty sure there are no restrictions on applying for sponsorship once you've worked with a company, I think it's a fairly common way of doing it. Moving isn't as big a deal for me as it would be for most either - no wife, kids or mortgage, so a permanent shift isn't all that stressful.

Thanks again for your help.
