Thumbs up Where in Melbourne Should We Live???

All...first timer here. We are thinking of taking an opportunity to move to Melbourne for my job and we are looking for the right place to live.

OK...so it might make it easier for me to tell you a bit about us and what we are looking for as it pertains to housing and location. We are city people. We would like to live in the middle of the action. We are young (late 20's), outgoing and active. Our ideal location would be in walking distance to dining, shopping and pubs. We are willing to sacrifice living space for location. I will be traveling for business periodically so I would prefer the location to be safe for when my lady is at home alone. We are looking for a studio or a 1 bedroom apartment but we don't have any idea as to the price or what we should expect for our money.

Can someone make some suggestions on location, price and even property name?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe Carlton or East Melbourne or Fitzroy or Richmond are good starting points if you want to be able to walk into the city. Plenty of young people live in Southbank which is right on the city centre fringe but I think it's a bit soul-less. South Melbourne is OK too. Prahran is another good suburb for young people but you can't walk into the city centre from there. All of those suburbs are safe. Most of them are profiled on a website called cityhobo which can give you plenty more information.

Just be wary that many of the new flats that have gone up have thin walls, so it might pay to visit any potential new flats after hours to see if you can hear your neighbours. And if you are one of those people that plays loud music, be mindful your taste in music may not be your neighbours!!

Also, there is a rent shortage in Melbourne at the moment which could make things a bit harder to find and definitely more expensive.

Another tip, if you do find a place to move to that is not within walking distance of the city centre, then aim to be on a train line because it's a much quicker and easier way to get into the city than tram or bus.

Hi jpm45794,

Not sure if you are interested in renting or buying. The above mentioned suburbs are good.

Good luck and kind regards,
