Talking anyone know anything about Adelaide?

Hello all,
First time i have ever used a forum, hope i am doing it right.
we are maried with 2 boys (2 and 4) and in the middle of trying to emigrate to adelaide. to be more presice, we are waiting to hear if SA will sponsor us.

I have never been to Oz, steve went to the ashes 2006 and saw cricket grounds in Oz, and some bars. He fell for Adelaide and now we are all going to see what the fuss is all about.

We feel we understand the visa process well enough, however we know little about the layout of Adelaide. We would love advice on where to live, where to socialise, where to send the kids to school/ childcare, who to work for ( me-nurse, him-accountant). Cost of living/ housing, advice on adapting to life in Oz. It would be lovely to have some friendly faces for when we get there too!

God, i just have too many questions but you all seem like a bright bunch. I d be greatfull for positive feedback only about Adelaide because I feel we have already heard the bad stuff.

Thanks, georgie and steve.

Hi Georgie and Steve,

There have already been some questions (and answers ) on Adelaide andif you use the search facility (third link from the right on the first black background row) you'll see that info too.

The Adelaide CBD (Central Business District) is fairly small in that you can walk across it in about 30 minutes. It's surrounded by parks and there are a lot of places that are commutable from Adelaide.

Have you checked out the "PLEASE READ...." sticky post towards the top of the forum? That has links to jobs, property, weather, schools and heaps more and it a good way to start investigating an area.

Where to live: What are you looking for? What is right for one family may not be right for another.

We (me and my husband) were in Adelaide over the weekend for a wealth conference and I had forgotten how beautiful it is. The churches (and I'm not religious) are beautiful and the parks. The traffic wasn't great but where we live in Mount Gambier 6 cars in considered a traffic jam and we did arrive Friday afternoon at rush hour.

I don't live in Adelaide but Mount Gambier is part of South Australia so I may be able to help with any questions there - just put them on the forum and someone will answer them.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Georgie and Steve!

Like you i am hopefully heading to Adelaide (this novemeber), depending on my visa.....

I loved Adelaide; all of it! It is clean, the people are friendly and it didn't seem overly crowded. Many, many churches......of multi faith origin, but i have to say, the place wasn't all holy and dull.
Housing costs are slightly more than in outlying towns, but that's just like the (y)UK! Coastal areas e.g. Glenelg; and the eastern 'burbs e.g Unley are more expensive for rental etc. It depends what you are looking for.
You could check out the websites for costings; Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au and domain.com.au.

Schools look good, most have websites and the DECS are really helpful about school admissions etc.... although you might not need them straight away!

Every suburb seemed to have a small shopping centre, and plenty of sporting/ social clubs. Oh and park areas for youngsters, skate parks and cycle parks for the older kids.

Central market at the weekend has lovely fresh, local produce that is cheaper than the "supermarkets"; the Marion centre does have all the clothing/ household/ sports and food shops you might want. It also has a cinema and bowling alley.

Good luck
Jane

Hi Georgie and Steve,

If you are looking for some peaceful and less congested place to live in Adelaide and suburbs would be the best choice. But if you are looking for some real fun with colourful nightlife and so so, Adelaide is not the right place. Although it is the Capital of SA it is still treated as regional and low population growth area. The entire city of Adeliade consists of about 5 to 6 lanes. The city sleeps about 7 pm or earlier even in summer when the sun sets about 9 pm during Feb. People are friendly and loveable

Employment oppertunities are less compared with NSW, VIC, QLD and WA. Housing is cheaper than the rest of the territories. Good schools and higher education. The DIMA normally takes care of housing for new arrivals through DFC for the first 12 weeks and meanwhile you may opt either to purchase or rent a suitable house. You can make use of the On Arrival facility provided by Govt. of SA for new immigrants. Below are some On Arrival Services Available:

* Meet and Greet
* On Arrival PUBLIC Accommodation
* On Arrival PRIVATE Accommodation
* Migrant Employment Consultancy Service
* Overseas Qualifications Service
* Settlement Orientation Service

I am not posting the URL for SA but you would easily find it on the web.

Good Luck to You,
Devi

Not sure about the city sleeps about 7pm since we've still been in restaurants at that time or even later! The outdoor cafes and bars are still usually buzzing at that time when I've been there on a visit.

Regards,
Karen

No worries Kaz. That was when I stayed there during 2006 on a 495. Things might have changed now.

Hi there, we have family in Adelaide, and I like the place very much. I love the Brossa Valley,some of the best restaurants in the world in thevineyards..... They have one of the biggest shopping centres in the southern hemisphere which was absolutely gorges, great for kids, cinemas etc.... the beaches were lovely, I thought the city was well laid out with trams etc. job wise, I am sure you will be welcomed with open arms, very best wishes for your new exciting life ahead of you
