Default Finding a job that is on the MODL

Hi all,

My wife and I are seriously considering a move to Australia from Canada. I have found my profession on the MODL (Computing Professional - specializing in CISSP).

I am just wondering how easy it is to find an actual job there. I have looked at some job boards and head hunting companies but I haven’t seen any advertisements for jobs that fall under this category.

I assume that since it is on the MODL there must be a demand, but where is the demand? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi totivs,

Have you tried contacting some IT agencies directly and asking them about the demand for that skill set?

Also if your wife is working check her skill set on the list as well. You never know it may be easier to get in on her skill set that yours.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the reply. I am in the process of identifying and contacting some IT agencies. I had assumed that since the occupation was on the Migration Occupations in Demand list that there must be many opportunities. I will keep looking and see what I can find.

My wife doesn’t work so that isn’t an option. I have taken some online visa assessments; all of them show that I have enough points to qualify for a Skilled Migrant Visa, so I’m not too concerned about that. I am concentrating on the “golden greeting”, finding a job before we move there. I know that this rarely happens, but it’s worth a shot.

Jason.

Hi Totivs,

I was just wondering why would you like to move from canada to Oz ???

I am also looking to move to Oz and also have option of moving to canada but not sure which one to finalise. I have not yet make up my mind till date.

I am also computing professional with 10 years of experience. I am staying in US since 4 years and looking to that Canada would be better option in long run but Oz is also looking exciting.

Would be nice if you would like to share your thoughts here.

thanks & regards
CD

HI CD,

Our motivation for moving to Australia is purely personal. Canada has a lot to offer and is a great place to live. I don’t have any real “negative” reasons why we want to move. It’s more that we want something different and interesting. In 2003 I moved to China and lived there for a little over 3 years. That is where I met and married my wife. We have been back in Canada for little over a year now and are looking for something more interesting.

I guess if I had to come up with solid motivators they would be:

One problem is the Province we live in, British Columbia. The housing prices here are ridiculous. For a two bed two bath house in the lower mainland (Vancouver area) the average price is $620,000. In any other metropolitan area in Canada the average price for the same house is around $300,000. I am from British Columbia and I don’t have any real desire to live elsewhere in Canada. I’m not being a snob about it; I just figure that if we are going to move from B.C. it might as well be somewhere different and interesting.

A second problem/advantage to Canada is that our economy is so closely tied to the U.S. When they are doing poorly we do poorly, when they are doing well we do well. Right now it’s not so great. It is my understanding that Australia’s economy is closely tied to Asia. As Asia is doing so well right now (and will continue to for the foreseeable future), I feel that Australia will offer more opportunities.

I don’t know if that helps you at all. And I hope it wasn’t too long winded. Basically, Canada is a good place to live, it’s just not where we want to be right now.

Although I think that's true there is still talk of a recession here in Oz. There have been some redundancies and locally (Mount Gambier) some people are being laid off in the car sales industry. Also some people are selling their bigger houses since they over extended themselves. In no way is it close to what I'm hearing about the USA though!

In South Australia there is a big mining boom at the moment and as you say as China keeps asking for more resources we'll keep supplying them

Regards,
Karen
