Hi Colin,

Welcome to the forum.

Are the company sponsoring you for a visa or do you have that sorted out separately?

I've not been to Queensland yet but I found some websites which may be able to help:
Goondiwindi Newspapers ~ Newspapers.com.au
Goondiwindi Region::A Great Place To Visit, An Even Better Place To Live.

Although it sounds small (5,000 people - where I live is 25,000 and that seems a little small after the UK ) it does say that it's easy driving distance to Brisbane - 4 hours away! That's not what I call easy driving distance but that does seem to be accepted in Oz. We are about 4 hours from Adelaide (and the same from Melbourne) and we do hear of people driving there for the day!

Regards,
Karen

I hope your skill set is in demand. Most employers will not consider sponsorship unless your skill set is in demand since it's easier to get people closer to home.
Also most job applications ask that you already have a visa to work here.

Good luck with your job application.

Regards,
Karen

Colin, I drove a campervan from Darwin to Sydney, and Goondawindi was the first significant town I cam across upon entering Queensland (that is leaving Mt Isa the mining town). Its pretty quiet. They have a business development centre. Retirees town mostly. You might say you are on the edge of civilisation. People would be pretty friendly there. I stayed the night and they were friendly. Take your own wife, or you'll have to steal someone's. A word of caution, in can be hard to break into local communities in the country. I suggest joining the local sports club, football or cricket. There were some modern looking coffee shops, bars there. I think it would be a great place if you want a peacful place. No action though. You won't be going out drinking 5 nights a week. Lucky if you get two. Those towns haved shared activities, so you can always go to Inverell or Stanthorpe for some action, but pretty quiet.
