Default Hi, I'm new - need advice on getting employment in OZ

Hi,

My family have obtained a 175 visa in May 2011, and immediately started the arduous process of applying for work. My husband is well qualified, but so far (after many applications) has only had one job interview over the phone but no offer. Is it difficult to get employment whilst living being offshore? We were advised by a friend for my husband to go over for a few weeks and set up interviews... I don't know if this will be worth it.

I would really appreciate some advice

Thanks

It is very difficult to get a job offer based on a phone interview alone (though it can be done). I would certainly advise that you make the move and be available to attend interviews. Even in the rare instance that you do get an interview, with a prospective offer, most employers would actually want to meet you in person.

I would suggest that you contact a few recruitment agents and prospective employers and set up some interviews and let them know when you will be available for a face to face interview. I've applied for loads of jobs and had a 2 interviews out of those but no offer either. My situation is slightly different in that I am looking for employer sponsorship (175 visa application pending but I'm getting restless) but ultimately, with or without a visa, it is quite difficult to get a job from abroad, unless you are one those seasoned professionals who have been in the game for over 2 decades and would therefore be after the director positions.

I think we will have to do that - we have until April 2012 to do initial entry, but I think it would be good idea for my husband to go ahead and try for some face to face interviews. The thought of resigning on this side and taking a leap of faith move, and hope you get work is a bit terrifying - but in the end it might be our only course of action.

How far along is your 175?

My application has been in the queue for 5 months. I'd like to think that I would have CO by December but who knows.

Good luck with your move. If you have annual leave and can afford to take unpaid leave, it may be worthwhile to take leave from your current job and spend a month or so in Australia searching for a job.
Other option is to save up until April next year and then move over permanently.

I do believe that you will have more luck if you are in Australia. A lot of employers have actually asked me to get back in contact with them once I have a visa as opposed to an outright 'thanks but no thanks.'

Hi

Can you give any references of recruitment agents who can help me find a job which will sponsor a PR. I am currently in Oz on 457.
Thanks

My advice is to target employers directly. I've had more luck and responses to my emails when I've contacted employers directly - agents can be a hit and miss.

I'm using Seek website for most of my job searches - that might be a good place to start. You are better placed as you are already in Australia and therefore available for interviews, in addition to having current work rights. That said, most employers would sponsor you for a 457 and ensure that you are suited to their organisation and loyal to them before they sponsor your PR visa.

Out of curiosity, why is your current employer not sponsoring your PR visa?

Thanks for the quick reply, i will start looking over Seek.

My current employer doesn't like to sponsor PR for whatever reasons they may have, i guess its typical of an Indian company to do that. Also i guess it would make it easy for me to leave the company so that may also make them do that.
Thanks

Our application took 18 months (from online lodging to being granted), hopefully yours goes quicker (initially we were in priority group 5 but then they changed the occupation list and we were bumped up to priority group 3 - so ours is not either a fair reflection of how long it would take).

Anyways, thanks for the advice, will definitely use it! Good luck with your move as well!

So nice of you for posting a very relevant post indeed!

I have to add here something that needs to be answered as well ,while one is searching for relevant job, that what are prospects of getting an odd job and what kind/nature of odd jobs one could do in the meantime?

Thanks.
