Hi Dunsford,

Have taken the plunge finally.....am now in St Marys and am paying 300 bucks for a 3 bed room with a big lounge and an even massive backyard for a very very ancient house which looks like it will fall down any moment though.

Warm Regards,

DS3

Hi DS

That's great to hear, hope it works out for you. It looks like it will fall down, but I'm sure it's fine. The houses in large areas of Adelaide tend to have big cracks due to quite extreme soil movement - don't worry about it. St Marys is a nice spot.

Best wishes

D

But you are right ...we should talk about Adelaide in the open forum only so that some prospective migrant can read up and get some benefits since most of the migrants target only Sydney and Melbourne.

From whatever little research that i have done in person i have gathered that the average person earns around 50k dollars per year compared to the national avg of 60k dollars. However if both the partners are working one can save a lot of money for sure.

The average house rent in Adelaide in a decent area is around 300 dollars as compared to 400 dollars in other cities. Day care is just like house rent expenses with approx day care charges of 70 to 80 dollars a day.

Now i am trying to find out which suburb offers the best value for money and shall let you know the same if i can stumble across any such info. Now unfortunately Adelaide has very very few general jobs and specialised skill sets like nursing, accountancy, specific functions in IT, Carpentry, Plumbing etc are in demand.

Most of the ppl we met there were really very friendly and helpful. However almost everything shuts down at 6 and if you dont have a car you are doomed after 8. Frequency of buses reduce drastically and the rednecks and other non civil weirdos get drunk and start their hunt on the passerbys.

Very important to have a decent car and not a very old one as they attract attention. Hence i want to search for a very safe locality so as to avoid any sort of problem, racial or economical, whatsoever

That's all in a nutshell. What has been your feedback?Have you done a reco trip yet?

Warm Regards,

DS

Default Primary school advice

Are you after high schools or primary schools?

The best public high schools are probably Norwood Morialta, Glenunga, Brighton, Maryatville, Adelaide, Unley, Urrbrae, Heathfield, and Henley (not in any particular order). The best primary schools are often those in the catchment zones for those hich schools. Glenunga has an accelerated program for gifted children, admission to the program is very competitive. Marryatville is has a special interest in music.

Furnished rentals are available but not common. It's usually only a temporary option.

The nicest most upmarket areas are those around the best schools, mainly around the south eastern suburbs; also the inner south around Unley, around Glenelg/Brighton, and the hills area around Stirling.

My children go to Stirling East Primary and I find it excellent.

For good schools on a more limited budget I recommend looking at Blackwood High School and its feeder primary schools.

Let me know what type of housing you are after and some idea of budget and I can try to point you in the right direction.
I have younger children in 2nd and 5th grade here in the states. We might be accepting a job offer in Adelaide and were wondering if public schools are free in SA?

You mentioned neighborhoods you thought were good thank you for the information as I am looking at housing. Are your prices quoted in weekly rates or monthly rates?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated as we have never been to Australia before.

Thank you.
