Have you been to Australia at all since having it? Do you extenuating circumstances as to why not if not? Otherwise you'll be in with problems applying for a new one! DIAC expect people to use their visa not just add them to their collection.
If you let your RRV lapse then you have no legal basis to enter Australia as a Resident (The visa is called Resident Return Visa). So you need to apply for one before you enter AU and the old one lapses.
If you haven't spent 2 yrs out of the last 5 and not the last year mostly in AU then you might be eligible for a 3 month RRV. But make a serious decision now if you can move over to AU for a substantial period.
