Hi Christina,

Although our local Woolworths and Coles (supermarkets) do not sell any appliances shops like Target and Kmart have fairly cheap appliances and they are all over (I think).

Regards,
Karen

Hi Christina, Kmart is right up your street and is what you are looking for, similar to Asda/Tesco.

I think Kmart basically IS Asda!

Wal-Mart is ASDA (at least as far as company ownership is concerned). Sadly there's no Wal-Mart here.

Target is alright but pricier than I feel it should be LOL, but Coles and Safeway are likely to have the basics, too.

Hi,

Safeway and Woolworths are the same group over here and they do the basics at reasonable prices. You should also have a look at BigW, also part of the Safeway and Woolworths group, they have most things you need at reasonable prices. I think that there are DFO's (Direct Factory Outlets) in most places and they are also good.

Thanks for the info, we arrive on Sunday and straight into a rental so thought I could stock up on the basics that day until our good stuff arrive later. I found Coles online do the basics but not sure if this is in store and they don't do a delivery on a Sunday! I'm sure we will manage just freting a little as MIL will be there with us as she is meeting us at the airport (hubby is an aussie) and I'm sure she will want a cup of tea!

I'm sure the MIL will bring any necessary tea that she wants You're the one travelling for a day, not her!

It's good to plan ahead, but I think you may want to wait a day or so before hitting the supermarket. You'll be completely exhausted when you arrive. Maybe better to ask your MIL where you can go for a nice meal and a coffee or something, and then hit the sack.

Incidentally, Coles does sell kettles and coffee makers and the like.

This must be different in different areas then

Maybe because we are more rural we don't have appliances in Coles and they don't deliver at all around here since I think that they only only do that in major cities.

Karen

could be. I have noticed some differences like when you were saying you got the firm toothbrushes at Coles. They don't sell them at all at my local store (online or otherwise). Fortunately the Safeway does LOL

I'm sure there will be lots of regional differences.

Try The Warehouse or Crazy Clarks, they're not supermarkets bit more like Wilco in the UK - their stuff won't last for ever but it will get you through those first few weeks.

If it does konk out just keep your receipts and take the things back for a refund or an exchange.
