Hi.

Have a job offer in Melbourne for AUD200k a year plus moving costs plus LAFHA. Would this salary be sufficient for my wife and I to live a decent, comfortable life over on that side?

Seems like a pretty expensive country, so not sure.

All opinions welcome.

You'll live a very comfortable life with that salary. You're right, it can be quite expensive over here.

Do you have an area of Melbourne in mind that you want to move to?

No real idea, but company is near botanical gardens in South Yarra (sp?) and someone has suggested I look in St. Kelda and surrounds.

Really have no idea, but have a month once I'm there to look around for a place.

Most important thing is I don't want my wife to have to work, unless she really wants to, so we both need to survive on my salary.

That said, we live pretty modestly and I certainly don't expect to be driving a BMW.

We moved to Frankston South (about 40km from Melbourne) 9 months ago. We love it here.

Have you checked out Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au for property prices (renting and buying), and also Moving to Sydney or Melbourne? Find where to live with Cityhobo - Home for info on suburbs?

There are quite a few members on here who live Melbourne way who can recommend areas to live...also do a search on the forum as this subject has come up before.

If you are going to be working in South Yarra, any of these areas would be suitable to live in (just a few suggestions)

South Yarra
Toorak
Windsor
Southbank
St Kilda
Richmond
East Melbourne
Prahran
Malvern East
Caulfield Nth
Glen Iris
Armadale

South Yarra is on a train line, so you could even live a little further out.

I spent most of my life in Berwick (40 kms SE of the CBD)....perfect !!!

In addition to the suburbs listed by sgilli3, I would also suggest looking at something perhaps less expensive, such as Bentleigh, Murrumbeena, Carnegie, Ormond, Elwood. It would also depend if you want to buy or rent.

Kind regards,
