I know all about skipping breakfast and not having enough fluids, both my sons (just going into p.2 & p.5) refuse breakfast, the utter thought makes them want to vomit it's outrageous but what can i do, they will tolerate yogurt (just). But any mention of toast or cereal and they just cringe, although they will eat toast at any other time of the day but they have never taken to cereal, which is weird as myself and hubby do! And again, sometimes they come home so thirsty, god knows what they get up to in school.

I'm going to be worried sick myself at first as we are going to Brisbane and so many of the schools do not have aircon, so trying to get them to drink even more in school is going to be like hitting a brick wall.

Anyway i hope your son is well.
hehehehehe, this sounds so funny, I dont have kids and I dont plan to have them for next couple of years.

but my husband sounds so much like your kids, he does not take milk, hates the thought of it, so I make vanilla shake every morning and add chocos to it, this is the only way he takes milk. you should try this as well. add a few drops of vanilla essence and sugar and bingo, it tastes awesome

Hi Dolly
Naughty boy! eat your breakfast, I was the same and was always sick.

I have heard a few comments about A&e and the wait. But I have been 3 times and have never had to wait, just gone straight in. I had kidney stones and the only thing that was a problem was getting the Doctors to sign off on the morphine. I also took my 3 year old and went straight in. So I think it depends on the hospital you go to. I went to Concord Hospital in Sydney, no waiting there.

Hi Dolly,

Glad to hear everything is okay with your son now.

I've not been to an ER in Oz but certainly I found that in the UK it depended on how serious the condition was. My Mum had problems with her gall bladder, went jaundiced and was set to an ER and she was seen very quickly because it could have been serious (it was gall stones which was painful but not serious in her case).

Regards,
Karen

Hey anj,

He's doing fine thanks. Back to normal (whatever that may be for a 16 year old!). No more 'epidodes', think maybe it was just a one-off thank goodness.

Or it might just be a sun stroke, this thing is common here in India with kids who eat nothing in the morning and run in school more than their body can take, just yesterday there was an article in the newspaper, thought I would share it with you. It talked about kids at the age of 13-16 need more vitamin than any of adults since their physical activity is at its peak and not to miss the hormonal changes. An ideal diet for them would be a glass of milk with cereal, a fruit, a sandwich high in protein, say with chicken or eggs and for the tiffin or the lunch box it should be a sandwich with lots of greens and ham or eggs or chicken to make it sound interesting . The article also mentioned about kids going unconscious because of lack of protein in their diet and too much or carbs in breakfast which is not sufficient source of energy for the physically active. The being unconscious is nothing but a sudden drop in the blood pressure level and dehydration in the body

I dont have kids but since I knew what happened to your kid, thought might as well read and pass the information

Hi Anj,

It's actually winter here so no chance of getting sunstroke at the moment!

We did a reccie trip a couple of years ago (April time)...temps in melbourne were up to 30 degs, it was really quite hot. We spent the first few days in the city getting acclimatised before getting on with the whistlestop tour. Anyway, on the second day we spent the day at Melbourne Zoo. We took bottles of water with us, and bought some there as well. No.2 son thought he was superman and didn't really drink much.

In the evening we went for some supper. It was what I call a pick and mix place....mexican/indian/chinese etc so we all split up to find food and then meet at our table. So, No.2 son came with me. We'd ordered our food and was standing waiting for it to be served. Mine came first. I put it on the tray and the next thing I knew was seeing son face down in my baked potato! Because he hadn't had much to drink, he'd got dehydrated and fainted. It shook him up a bit and the people at Crown (on Southbank) were fantastic and drove us all of the 2 minute trip back to our hotel). To this day we still call him lettuce boy because of the lettuce and mayo stuck all over this face

Now, in one respect looking back it was very funny with the lettuce etc but it was also a huge wake up call. Not so much at the moment, but generally, we've always got water with us. You cannot afford to be blasé about drinking enough water.

Dolly

I can understand how he feels when u call him lettuce boy, i fell off first floor once, as kids we used to slide on the rail, that day i was doing the same singing some rhyme my dad used to sing for us and i came down from the first floor, landed straight on a waste tyre that was kept there for god knows what reason, with not a scratch on me, and when i saw people running towards me screaming, i cried and cried and cried... hehe. till date they all tease me with that same rhyme and laugh. its so funny. and i come from a joint family, so the number of people teasing is much higher

whatever the reason was for your son being unwell, take care of him. kids dont listen these days, even at my age, being 31, i still don't listen to my parents , so why blame kids.
