Darn it hate doing those! I have come across a few in the UK a few years ago but they seemed to have declined in popularity.

Are they the more general IQ/generic type tests or specifically aimed at the technical skills?

Thanks for the advice on the time to move as we were thinking around Jan time but might revise that now.

Hi,

Tell me about it!! The questions that I know of are aimed at technical ability. I'm afraid I only have Java type questions and I don't know how they relate to C#. They like questions about Design Patterns, J2EE architecture, frameworks, etc. As for the January lull in the market that is information I got from the recruitment companies - not my own experience.

As for your resume - they seem to like detail with up to 4 pages if you have enough to say. My UK resume is 2 pages long - my oz version is now 4 pages. Consider a skills matrix with a break down of your skills along with years of experience and/or competence level (state scale) it helps to focus what you have especially if you want to work contracts.

Another suggestion look at some of the government jobs - they have selection criteria which you need to address and highlight your skills or experience. If you are anything like me I like to write something then go back and review it later to amend and tidy it up. It all comes down to practicing - the art of interviewing - a skill in it's own right!!! Have some examples ready to give you a head start.

Hope this helps!

Pam

Thanks Pam.

Yep my uk CV is about 2 pages long as well so will have to check out some Australian Cvs and adapt mine.

Did you find it easy to find work and did they seem more reluctant to hire an english person rather than an Australian?

Alot of people say the money is less than the uk did you find this too?

There is a big demand for IT professionals in Canberra (the ACT). I know that people describe the ACT and Canberra as being too boring, but it is surrounded by lots of countryside, is not that far from Melbourne or Sydney and it does have a great outdoors lifestyle.

Hi,

I am right in the middle of finding of work. In the UK I was working for the Forestry Commission in Scotland and my wage compares exactly in fact I will earn more. Being from the UK doesn't seem to stop them giving me an interview but they do take ages to get back to you. I moved originally to New Zealand (Wellington) and I had a job within 2 weeks of landing but there is plenty of work available. In Brisbane I am competing with a lot more people and it is taking longer and the market has been a bit slow lately - even the recruitment companies are finding this and I think I have spoken to just about all that operate in Brisbane's CBD.

Fingers crossed it will come together soon.

Pam
