Question Are US and Australian Resumes Different?

I've been sending my resume to tons of employers in the hope of getting a sponsored position in Australia. However most are coming back unsuccessful despite me being what is considered a successful person here in the states.

Can anyone in Australia who is familiar with resume and job expectations there give me some tips to revamp my resume for the Australian job market?

On another someone connected topic, has anyone ever got an Australian address or post office box (is there such a thing there?) and put that on their resume? I know my boyfriend's brother got a box in New York City but lived in Connecticut and the only reason he got the job was because they thought he lived in NYC. I am guessing this is a bad idea for Australia - but just curious!

Thanks,

Jenni

Hi Jenni,

Are your skills in demand in Australia? If not then companies are unlikely to sponsor you since they can get someone more local to fill the role. It's not a matter of being successful but whether your skills are in demand.

I can't help with the resumes since I've not had to do one in Oz.

You can get post office boxes here see Post Office Boxes but I'm not sure whether you have to live in the country to apply.

Regards,
Karen

Default My Skills

According to the points test my skill is a 60 - is that good? I'm a Human Resources Manager with 9 years experience, 5 of which I spent owning and running my own company.

If you check out the links in the "PLEASE READ..." sticky post that takes you through to the skills in demand list.

I think 60 is good but I would still check the skills in demand. I think I had 60 for IT skills but some IT skills were in demand whereas others were not.

Karen

Hi Jenni,

If you do a google search on how to write a resume, there are tons of websites that show how to set one out.

This website is a good start: Career Advice & Research - Write a great resume, cover letters, interview tips, salary information & more
