Default Tips/Advice Please?

Hi All,

My wife and I would like to move to Australia and are currently trying to do our research.

We have been led to believe that the cost of living is around the same, and clothes are more expensive.

Is this true?

Also, how do wages compare to UK?

Any help you can offer is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Please check out the "PLEASE READ..." post since that has links to job agencies.
The "Cost of Living" post has lists of costs for various areas.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask

Regards,
Karen

No worries. Quite a few people on here aren't used to forums which is why we point them in the right direction

Karen

Hi Jamie,

Wages will be dependent on what particular field you are in. Generally speaking wages here are lower than in the UK and living costs differ. Personally, I find our weekly food shop more expensive than back in the UK. But utility bills are cheaper here.

You've probably seen by now the links on the 'please read....' sticky. Check out the jobs links for wages comparisons.

Dolly

If you compare, wages are lower than UK and the US but most people choose to move to OZ because of a better lifestyle in terms of their state of mind and better weather conditions. Being in UK and the US, one has to keep running all day to meet ends and to lead a life they wish to lead and still be trapped in snowy town for most of the winters.

Whereas from Asian countries, people like us move because of better living conditions since most of Asia is still developing and falls in highly populated countries. Also, work opportunities are better with better scope for future in financial terms. Most of Indian move there because they can save as much as they earn in India. So that works out good for them.

And of-course because a working day in Australia isnt about being stuck in traffic for 2 hours everyday followed by 8-9hours of work and back to being stuck for an hour or two to get back home. It would probably be 8-9 working hours followed by maximum 30 mins of commute both ways.

Anj you are dead on the money when describing going to and from work in the USA. The traffic is bad and the weather is really crazy in the winter months. I know I am not moving to Australia for this reason but you describe a work day in the USA as if you live here.")

well my husband had an option to go for H1 and move to the US, we even talked to a friend who is a consultant, they were very happy to do it for us since my husbands resume had good weight attached to it. . But in the begining itself we chickened out. I have a big problem of being obsessed with things, Once I know I have to do something, I read and read and read. Probably to get a feel of the place. And when I was checking out options to live and work, I thought New Jersey is the place to live and New York to work, that means an hour one way everyday, moreover i could not work since i will be going as a spouse, so what happens to all the knowledge base that i have.

And frankly, Shekhar (hubby) said I dont want to run the rest of my life just to earn money, an dbeing newly married i was with him on this.

we made a decision to move to OZ just because he would have better work experience, being a system administrator and being involved in setting up servers, he does not have much here in India. Most of the jobs that he has here are night hours, and we are not ready to sacrifice our lives for the sake of money. .

A friend of ours just went to the US, doing the same New Jersey to New York every day, he says i have lost it completely, secondly he told us once, what the heck, the snowy breeze just wont go.

jeeez, I can talk so much hats off to those who read my crap
