Default Need Expat Tax Advisor Sydney

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a tax advisor he may be able to help with some expat-related tax questions.

I need help with the following:

1) Can I claim LAFHA. I have been in Sydney working for 2 weeks on a 457 business visa.

2) My wife is working as a contractor for her company back in the USA. Looking for advise on how to best minimize her taxes. She can be paid to a bank account in the states, Australia, or any other foreign country.

Appreciate if some one could refer me to a tax advisor who may be able to help with this.

Thanks

Can't help you with the first question, but as far as the second goes, it matters not at all where she is getting paid. The fact of her being physically present and resident in Australia while working means that she should be eligible for the overseas earned income exclusion - once you have been in Australia for 12 full months. This may involve filing for an extension on filing your US taxes (as US citizens, you both have to file and declare worldwide income no matter where you live).

You each are entitled to the exclusion, which you take by filing a form 2555. Details are in IRS publication 54.

For tax help, you may want to consult an enrolled agent - there are a few in Australia. Use the National Association of Enrolled Agent website to find one (just enter the country and then hit search). https://portal.naeacentral.org/webpo...ch.aspx?Token=
Cheers,
Bev
