Default School enrollment fees

Hi. We have 2 children aged 7 and 13 that will be enrolled to school upon arrival to AU. Ihave just realized that we have to pay 5000$ pr child pr year for school. I have a 457 visa. Have I misread anything and can it differ from city to city? We are going to stay in Perth.
Thanx
Martin

Hi Martin,

I know that schooling in NSW on a 457 visa will cost $4500 plus $110 for intake fees. Although you can get exemption depending on amount of children of school age and your household income. I'm not sure about Perth. I'll do some investigating and report back.

Dolly

OK.. from what I can find out, fees are only payable if you're in NSW or ACT. To be absolutely sure I'd contact DET (Department of Education and Training) Department of Education and Training - Info for Parents to find out. You'll find out details of fees here Our Policies - WA Department of Education and Training

Hi Martin and Dolly,
OMG not more shelling out!
I have 3 kids to educate; and on a limited salary that's gonna hurt!!!
Is this for state or private schools? I knew about the annual subscription to pay, but didn't realise i would be doling out that much!

The schools i contacted about my kids have not mentioned this.
Martin where did you get this information?

Help
Jane

Hi Jane,

I can't remember where you're heading, was it Adelaide? If so, you're OK!

PHEW!
Thanks Dolly,
Adelaide it is, and by the looks of things, the right choice!

I have contacted the education board in SA, got no response, beaurocracy pah!

I had seriously envisioned a tent on the beach at this rate; savings permitting

Just be prepared for all the books you'll need to buy for school (plus the uniforms). Within a month of us arriving we were in for $900 for books (most of which No2 son hasn't used!), $900 in school fees for the year and the uniforms. Apart from the uniforms, nothing else was mentioned when we went to the school to enrol the boys so it all came as quite a shock!

Just make sure when you do enrol your posse, that you ask how much the fees are, how much books are (they should have a book list) and a rough idea of uniforms (also, there should be a list).

Wow. This is unexpected. Dolly, Martha and I are almost ready to ship off for Melbourne on our 4 year adventure with 5 children in tow. Am I understanding correctly that with a 457 visa we will have to pay $5K per student for our children to enter VIC schools? Is this statewide or is this public school charge to 457 visa holders a local charge? How about in Frankston South area???

Any info would be well appreciated!

Dolly is only occasionally on the forum at the moment so it might be quicker to contact some schools in South Frankston to check.

I got into the habit of when I was contacting anyone new to say that I was new to the country so what did I need to know? There are things that Aussies won't bother to mention since it's the norm over here but it can come as a surprise to a newcomer.

Regards,
Karen

$5,000 may be the case for private schools, not public schools.
Public schools should cost about $500 a year (and generally includes books)

There are some great schools in Vic (both private and public)
My kids went to a fabulous state/public school in Berwick, and it cost us less than $500 each to attend.
