Default independant skilled visa

Hi, we have been told that because my husband has no formal qualifications, we cant go out on the independant skilled visa. We were also told that there is no point in him gaining a qualification in his I.I. field as for that kind of visa he would need to have a diploma, is this correct does anyone know?

There is normally a comprehensive list of required skills with their appropriate points on the Australian immigration site.

PS GO SEE AN AGENT for a free assessment....

Hi AnxiousMum,

It depends on what your husband does as to whether that info may be correct.
My husband came out as the main applicant on a skilled independent visa and as a gardener he was expected to have formal qualifications although he did have to prove what he could do to a trade assessment body.

Trade skills do not always have to have formal qualifications - that's why my husband was main applicant because I was in IT and I didn't have a degree and it was thought that we didn't stand much of a chance with me as first applicant.

As Halo mentions when in doubt you can always contact an agent since the first consultation is usually free. Otherwise depending on where you are based you could try going to a migration expo and getting more info there.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Karen,

I notice you said you are in IT and because you dont have a degree you didnt stand much of a chance. This is the problem my husband will have then, as he has over 20 years experience but no formal qualifications to show for it. Could he get a qualification now and see if that works or does it have to be a degree?

Hi there,

My husband has been in IT for over 25 years and has no formal qualifications. He passed his skills assessment and here we are in the Land of Oz. As long as his job is on the skills in demand list, and he is under 45 years of age by the time the visa application is lodged, you shouldn't really have a problem.

I always recommend seeking the advice of a migration agent. The first consultation is usually free, without obligation (always check that they are MARA/MIA registered).

Dolly

Dolly has already given you her answer and they are here in Oz!

My case was that I'd been a contractor for 10 years and I'm not sure whether that was a negative as well as not having formal qualifications. I think it's harder to get clients to give recommendations when you are not their employee. Also it can be harder to prove exactly what you've done since managers move on etc.

Dolly and her husband is here so it can be done.
Our agent was the Emigration Group (they are based in the UK & NZ) if you want to check with them to see what they say and I think Dolly used George Lombard from memory.

Regards,
Karen
