Conflicting police check/meds info on forums

Hello again...sorry for all the questions but thanks in advance for your advice. I'm confused about two things I keep seeing on all the forums:

(1) I have read some people declare adamantly that police checks are not necessary for 457 visas UNLESS you have said on the application form that you have a conviction (which I don't)

Other people have said that police checks are required of them even though they have no conviction history.

(2) Some people say only chest x-rays are needed (no other meds) UNLESS you are of school age, plan to be working in a school or a hospital etc etc. (which I don't)

Other people say they had to have a full medical even though they were of good health and going to work in an office.

Can anyone help me sort out the truth from the fiction on these two points? Arrrrrrrggggggghhhh!
