Default Education costs - primary school

Hi,

Am thinking of applying for a Skilled Independent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 175). Myself, my wife and daughter would be covered by it

My daughter is 3. She would be 4 by the time we get to Australia.

We would move to Sydney as we know a lot of people moving there

I am just wondering about education costs for mty daughter. Would she be eligible for free education with the Skilled Independent Migrant Visa?

Thanks ..

She would but starting at age 5 (kindy). Age 4 would be pre-school and most pre-schools have rates similar to daycare. However you would be eligible for childcare rebates and family benefits depending on your income and assets. This is done by application to Centrelink and full details and forms are available at the Centrelink website: Centrelink - assists people to become self-sufficient and supports those in need

Thanks for that.

We've looked at rates for day care and they seem very expensive. But can you tell me if primary school is free for people on Skilled Migrant Visas? Do we have the same rights as permanent residents?

The Skilled Migrant Visa (175) = PR so yes, same rates as Citizens and other PRs. While the tuition in a public school is covered there are other activity fees that come up during the year. These are different by school so you can find out more when you enrol your children. I don't have a range for these as I don't have children in school yet.

I read on another thread somewhere on here about searching wikipedia so I did a quick search for you and you should be able to contact some schools and find out more...

List of government schools in New South Wales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hope this helps
