Default Looking for Employment/Emigrtion Info.

Dear All,

I am a recent university graduate in the U.S. I earned a B.S. in Journalism with a minor in Poli. Sci. at Indiana University and graduated with honors. I have worked extensively in the fields of broadcasting and sports PR (internships with two major league baseball teams, two university athletic departments and two radio stations). However, I have still been unable to find full-time employment and have decided to broaden my horizons.

I am targeting Australia for emigration because I know several people who have travelled there and speak highly of the culture.

Any reccomendations on how I would go about looking for employment in the fields of communications, sports, or even a sales or marketing job (I sold ad space while working my radio internships) in some of Australia's larger cities (i.e. Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Perth, Melbourne, etc.)?

If I was put in touch with a potential employer, what would be my next step? Would the employer help sponsor my emigration or is that something I have to look into on my own?

Thank you very much. I'm sure these are very basic questions to those of you who have moved down under, but I would appreciate any help you may be able to give.

Thanks again.

Don't you think that deciding to emigrate (leave for good and only come back for visits) is a bit of an extreme reaction to not finding a job? Or do you just mean you want to work in Australia for a while? I also think if you are really planning to move here permanently it might be a good idea to visit first. Though if you just graduated, extra money for trips probably isn't readily available.

I came over on a company transfer, so it was fairly easy for me to get a temporary work visa. However, I think for a company to sponsor you they have to prove that there is a shortage in Australia. The Australian government maintains a list of needed skills. I doubt journalism is one of them. I assume you know you will have to learn to spell differently, and there are even some grammar differences between American English and the rest of the world.

I don't think pay here is as high as it is in the US, which will be a consideration if you have debts to pay. Remember that when you see that dollar sign, the dollar in question is currently worth $.86. Though as the US dollar continues to fall that will be less of a problem.

All visas are awarded on a points system, and you get points for having a profession on the list, speaking English, and having relatives in Australia. Youth counts, too, apparently. This web site has a section on jobs in Australia.

If you do not have much money, then moving to a new country is probably not helpful. It can be expensive to move to another country. You have to pay travel costs, and then pay to get set-up in your new country.
