Red face Cars ----> What to buy for +- $AUS20K

Family of 4 - Mom/Dad and two little children.

What is the car to get (fuel consumption is NOT an issue) that.
1. Is reasonable to insure
2. Is cheap to service
3. Is common (Holden Commodore - Ford Falcon etc) for tyres etc

I have had a look at drive.com.au but I need to narrow it down.

Quite like the SV6

Regards
Karl

Hi Karl,

Have you had a look at Used Cars - New Cars - Search New & Used Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au That is one of the most popular car sites over here.

You get car basic insurance with the car registration (rego) and then you can get other car insurance too.

Holden is common but it can also depend on what's around where you live. We live in a rural area and there are no European dealerships other than Mercedes. There is of course a big Holden dealership

Sorry I can't help you with the rest.

Regards,
Karen

Another thing to consider in Oz is that there are loads of automatic driven cars on the roads! (boo hoo i can't stand them myself) but there you go!

I'll be going for the good old manual, apparently they are cheaper too!

Is anyone thinking of shipping their car in a 40 footer with their furniture, because i was thinking of that as an option as second hand car prices have dropped dramatically here and we would have to give the car away to get rid of it, our car is only a 3 year old Mazda 6 and i know its reliable, might be worth paying the few grand extra to ship considering we'll have to fork out for decent car anyway. we recently sold our Mitsubishi pajero for 10K less than it was worth just to get rid, big shocker

Tell me about it. I bought a Chrysler Voyager for £12K four years ago, eventually sold it for £1.5K. Beautiful car...broke my heart. We could have shipped it over but it's too much hassle. I think Karen shipped her car over but it was a whole lot of hassle for her.

ok so what you're saying is that it's a pain to ship anything!! i was also hoping to avoid having to ship but it'll end up more expensive to purchase necessities, wasnt thinking of shipping much furniture (if any at all) cos i would like to rent out my house here in ireland fully furnished, and rent fully furnished in Oz, big decisions to come

Hiya I have not been on here for a while, but if anyone is looking for a car/van and you live Sunshine/Brisbane/Gold Coast area let me know as I have a guy that I send my clients to who is a licenced dealer who buys direct from the auctions in Brisbane saving you $$$$, he will take you to the Auctions for you to look yourself, he will do all checks to make sure the car is not under finance, he is a mechanic so knows that the car is sound and can provide you with references if needed.

Hope this helps
