Question How much salary?

Ok, so its my turn to ask a question or 2.

I have been accepted to go skilled visa route, but i have a concern over salary and actual cost of living.

Can anyone advise me of the minimum salary i would need to pay my way, including my wife and 2 young children?

Assuming i will be renting (don't really want to sell our house in England) and all the other relative costs for a family of 4.

We are looking at Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and maybe Melbourne.

Thanks for any pointers anyone can give me (us)

Hi STGO,

Have you checked the "PLEASE READ...." post since that has links to property rental sites, job websites and tax calculators?

There is also the "Cost of Living" post that has costs for most of those areas you mentioned.

If you know how much you will be getting paid, you can roughly work out how much you'll have left after tax, rentals and costs and then it's up to you if you can live on that

It's really hard to judge since people have different expectations of how they want to live out here, where they want to live etc.

Regards,
Karen

Thanks Kaz,

I have looked at the other posts and done a rough calculation before posting this thread up, i seem to be sailing quite close to the breadline with my expected salary.

I was after anyone with experience of actually living there and having a reasonably normal life with a wife and 2 kids 1 car and living on the bread line. This would give me a clear indication of what i may need to negotiate to salary wise.

Thanks again, this site is really useful

Hi there STGO,

Have a look at the sticky at the top of the forum page "cost of living figures". That'll give you a start.

Salary? Well that all depends on which State you move to and what your occupation is.

We live in Melbourne. I really don't like to comment on salaries because what one person would think as a viable salary, another would think it's not enough for their life style. It's dependent upon which area you live in, as with everywhere there are expensive areas and not so expensive areas. If I were to say we would struggle on, say $70,000, some people would say they could live comfortably.

So have a look at that thread, then have a look at your possible earning potential and see if it looks viable.

Dolly
