What I have seen is that AUD 150K per annum is considered to be a very good pay in Australia. And this is the pay for the high level positions for people having good experience in their respective fields.
But this pay is not enough (or is it?) Especially if a person is good at what he does, he will get more pay in his own country or he can earn more than this by being an expat in many other countries.
Then why should a talented migrant bother to come to Australia? Opportunities provided in Australia are good, but are not great ... especially for the very crowd Australia would like to attract. Cream of wannabe migrants may realize that the waiting period and hassle of immigration is just not worth it ... ?
At the end, Australia will get hurt more... much more than eligible migrants. I do realize that there is whole class of wannabes who just think Australia is a wonderland and will perhaps solve their every problem and I bet most people want to come to Australia to be rich. But thats not gonna happen. Not every migrant is gonna get rich in Australia especially not those who dont stand a chance to get rich in their own country. And at the end Australia is going to be filled with people mediocre talent (no offence intended) adding little to no value to its economy or society.
Summary: Australia needs (super) migrants more than migrants needs Australia. Australian immigration system allows mediocre but patient migrants and the country is loosing its attractiveness as a destination because of difficult migrant policies (And new point system is not helping).
But Immi does not set max pay scales. The AU market does. As long as migrants that are qualified for the jobs come for the pay offered and jobs get done do a good level then the payscale is sufficient.
Ultimately the market decides what wage people work for. The market will adjust upwards as inflation and other cost factors work their ways in. Also if migrants are not taking job offers then those rates will also adjust upwards. Finally migrants usually do not make up most of the job market, the majority are still made up of Australian citizens (many of whom have a migrant background).
If 150K AUD is considered 'low' what wage are you comparing it to that is far higher? And do those places have higher costs of living, or other costs that justify the higher wages?
Wage is one thing. And visa processing is another.
Both these factors attract the migrants.
Australia doesn't needs 150K mediocre migrants. They will suffice with 50K super migrants.
And their visa system misses this completely.
You're making a big assumption that the wage attracts only mediocre migrants. In fact the AU visa processing system is probably more difficult to pass at the skills stage than most others. It's being copied now in the UK so it has its merits.
And 150K is a good wage here, it is untrue that the applicants who are good enough to attract that wage would get much more in most places. It's actually a bad generalisation to even has such a statement as wage varies by demand for skill in the country. For example among Engineering Petroleum/Gas/Mining earn the most. But in a place like Dubai or China it could be the Civil Engineer or structural engineer that attracts top wage because their shortage pressure is different.
To have a proper discussion on this topic you need to be a bit more specific with examples. Otherwise the Australian system missing the point or being improper has no meaning. If it is missing the point please provide a concrete example on how it does so and how another country gets this right.
We did not come to Australia to get rich but to get out of the rat race (where you have to earn more just to stand still).
Higher wages are not everything and you have to take into account costs and living conditions. In regional Australia most people are lucky to earn $50K and and the average wage is a lot less than $150K.
By the way some businesses make money here simply by bringing an idea from another country here so it's not true that people who didn't get rich in their own country can't get rich here. Just the other day one Aussie was telling me that there are no poor Italians around here because they worked hard and set up successful businesses....
By the way very few employees ever get rich - well not what I call rich
this makes for interesting reading. From a personal point of view. My wish to move to Australia is not based on my salary, I will be slightly worse off for the move. As the above post suggests it about quality of life, and the wish to be out of the rat-race. This is certainly my main motive, and one that I have remained focused on through the process.
What I don't understand is why do people want to migrate to be rich. Wouldn't you have more of a chance winning a lottery than becoming rich in some other country? I just don't think money makes anyone happy. It's as true as it always was: Money is the root of all evil.
I'd love to move to enjoy culture, beaches, sun and different styles of cooking....definitely to get out of the rat race - oh gosh in new york, the rat race is horrendous.... to put on my resume that I have international experience... to make new friends, maybe even meet a handsome man...
But Ugh at money coming into play.. what a turnoff!
The actual original quote is that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Money is not good or evil. It's inanimate - it's not even real. However what can be done with it can be good or evil.
Agree with Amaslam the job market forces will determine the salary. If there is a shortage of persons who can perform certain jobs the salary for the such jobs with surely rise. In terms of immigration it may result in persons from other countries moving to Oz (temporarily or permanently) to take up such jobs.
In case the shortage becomes acute, the immigration system may be refined.
There r many resons for immigration.Money is not the most important one.e.g IT professionals in India get very good salary in thier own country but they still immigrate to different other developed countries because they mainly want better quality of life.In India also quality standarads are improving now but, still roads are not the best polution , population ,take any deases highst numbers of infected people are in India for example HIV ADIS , TB ,Swine flu.So probably of normal person getting infected is very high. This is the reason many talented , best in thier field Indians prefer to settle in any of the developed countries ...Aus is just one of them.
Hope everyone is agree.
Thanks,
Ajay
