Default Anyone know how to go about starting a business in AUS?

Hello,

I've been thinking of moving to AUS for a number of years now and have visited twice before and am planning on another trip to Sydney soon.

On my previous trips, I've seen that there are many immigrants who've come there and started their own busness'(resteraunts, shops, etc) and was wondering what the process was?

I have the money but have a question as to the type of visa required since the only ones I see questions about are for working and student visas.

Since I'm not going there looking for employment, is there any type of "entrepeneurship" visa that one could apply for?

Any and all advice and info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

D

Hi,

I've found this government website with details on starting up a business.
business.gov.au home page

Also, here's the DIAC website for Business visa options Visa Options - Business - Visas & Immigration

I would suggest you contact an agent. There are 2 members who are agents and they sometimes post on here (Alan Collett or Liana Allen). Also I'd recommend George Lombard Welcome to Austimmigration | George Lombard Consultancy Pty. Ltd.

Good luck.

Dolly

Dolly,

Thank you so much for the quick info! I am perusing the links and so far from what I can discern, it looks like the regulations all stipulate that I have to have been running whatever type of business I want to open for two years prior to starting one in OZ. I could be reading this all wrong so I guess I should probably get some sort of agent. I'll consult the two you mentioned nd if you know of anyone else with any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm a U.S. Federal govt employee working in Kuwait right now in a managerial position that oversees contract quality assurance. I'm not sure how or if that experience would translate to any of the business skill assessments on the list in the provided link.

I guess I could always sign up for college there (I need to take some business classes) then after awhile with a student visa, sign up for the business program.

If you have regular contact with other immigrant agents experienced in this sort of thing, please feel free to refer my case and email. Looks like the process takes awhile and since I'm already 40, I'd like to beat the 45y/o limit and would like to hire someone soon.

Thanks again for the quick reply,

Take care,

D

What is this, a test?

As of yet, I've only skimmed the info but also thought I saw a section in one of the skill sets that stated that managerial experience of a certain level could also be taken into account...hence my question/comment regarding how said experience would translate to the business skills assessment list. I could be wrong and probably am but then, that's why I'm here, to ask and get advice.

As far as I know, people requesting some clarification from others on matters that they may not be well versed in is not a major faux pas and one of the main reasons this forum exists, no?

Word of advice my curmogeonly friend; if just that ONE question was enough to annoy you to the point that you would respond in such an asinine manner (as opposed to just shaking your head and moving on) then I suggest you ignore the rest of my posts from here on out.... as I plan on asking a LOT more, many of which, since I'm new at this, will undoubtedly NOT meet your criteria for "common sense".

Otherwise, if you simply cannot help yourself then just write me a ticket for whatever offense you think I've committed and move on, I really don't need the lecture.

Pax,

D

Hi Darnell,

Be assured that the rest of us will be happy to answer your questions politely. As far as I'm aware Oddball has not been through the process of moving to Oz whereas quite a few of us have moved or are in the process of moving.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Darnell,

i promise this is a polite reply!
We have just started really, but the option to buy/ develop a business is something my husband has been thinking about.
I have a job, so that's easy for me. Andrew ( the better half, he says) would be a house husband (i.e golfing!) for a while.
We have been told that he would have to apply through the foriegn investment board (FRIB) to start up. He has 15 years running his own business, but wants something new, maybe a games shop, cyber stuff, beyond my understanding as an old dear.
I hope you find what you need, let me know if i'm barking up the wrong tree, please.
Jane

Hi Jane,

Is this because you haven't got permanent residency yet? Usually once you have a PR visa you don't have to bother with FIRB - at least that's the case for property so I think it's the same for business.

Karen

Kaz,
it could well be. I understood it to be for any foreign investment, so it might be worth my while checking that out.
We are on a sponsored visa (when it comes through!), so maybe we will have to put any such plans on hold until we apply for PR.
Thanks for the input mate
J

Hello NM and thanks for the nice reply and info!

From what I've read of the process so far, I myself would have to go through the FIRB but as per Kaz's reply to you, am not sure if you would. My question was regarding the "actual experience running a business" aspect of the requirements, I used to manage/run a video shop while in college and did it for 2 years but don't think I'd qualify under the FIRB because it wasn't my own business but a corporate franchise.

I was thinking of sort of the same type of business as your husband; a cyber cafe/games/comic/book/dvd movies with maybe a coffee shop added. If your husband is able to get the ball rolling and needs an investment partner, silent or active, drop me a line either here or at desmoove@gmail.com.

Peace and thanks again,

D
