If my partner was to come to Aus on an ETA and was offered a job whilst there, would he then be able to stay and apply for permanent residence visa or would he have to leave the country every 90 days.

Hope this helps...looks like the ETA has a 1 year lifetime and you can stay in the country for 3 months per visit. Employment in prohibited.
