Default Our Stuff Is Here!!!!!

Hi all!

Finally, after four months in Oz, our furniture arrived approximately two months later than the initial estimate I am one happy bunny right now.

A couple things have been broken but nothing major (so far -- it was only delivered this morning so we've got plenty of boxes to open yet!). Our bed is in almost the condition we left it along with our shelving units. Woo hoo!

Now we're just waiting on the dog and then we'll truly be at home here

Woo Hoo!!!!! Fantastic news.

So everything went OK? No issues with the inventory list?

Enjoy unpacking all those boxes...

Dolly

Yes it takes so long. I think that something people should know when moving to Oz. The removal company will tell you its should take 6 weeks to get here. BUT it takes a while to clear customs so expect delays. We had plastic pine cones with our Christmas decorations and they thought they were real so we ended up paying to have them destroyed. It wasn't worth arguing about as then the furniture would have taking longer and I was 6 months pregnant and sleeping on the floor.

Great news on getting your stuff.

As we unpacked our boxes we kept saying "Why did we bring this?"
Have fun with the unpacking!

Regards,
Karen

hehe yes we had a couple of "why did we bring this?" moments for sure!

We were pleased that most of our stuff made it without breaking, but a couple of things that I never would've expected to break, did. I probably didn't pack them carefully enough because I thought they were sturdier than they turned out to be.

Also thought they'd be on a boat for six weeks, not four months! but there you go...

Some of the stuff has a funny smell though, almost like it's been on a boat for a long time Did anyone else experience the same? How long does it take for it all to "air out" or do you have to have some things professionally cleaned?

Hi Tiffani,

Was just wondering, what all stuff did u ship? Since i just got married, there is so much of stuff that i got form my parents as gift and so many other things that we picked for our house, basic things like a mixer/grinder(food processor), Utensils, Pressure Cooker, Bed, a 6" Coir Mattress, linen, Blankets, Portable Egg Beater, Microwave Oven, Pop Up Toaster, Juicer, the list is long. do people normally get all these things along? or do they discard them and buy the same stuff all over again? If i have do do this, i will be heart broken, since i just got everything not more than 3 months back.

And thn i hear the problem with the sockets, which means everything that we get, the plug points will have to be changed..

Anj

We brought everything over with us. But the company paid so we weren't out of pocket. If you don't want to part with something bring it along, we changed our plugs no-problem. Although 4 years later some of them haven't been changed.

Thanks Byo,

I guess its best to ship all of it. How long does it normally take if we ship things on consignment basis and not container basis? Because we are not allowed more than 20 kilos on board. So our basics will be so much that carrying all these additionals would be too much

Hi Anj,

We sold most of our electronics (except for our laptops) because we just thought it'd be simpler to buy them here. With that said, we didn't have any sentimental attachment to them the way you seem to have, so if it would really break your heart to part with something, bring it along!

You will have to change the powerpoints but you can buy adaptors at any electronics shop and they're not too expensive (between $10-$20 a piece) which is certainly cheaper than buying a new toaster and blender etc etc.

We brought the following: 2 beds (one full, one Queen with large canopy frame), solid teak table and six chairs, 2 book shelving units, one side table, wooden chest -- that's most of the big stuff. We also brought about 15 paintings/mirrors, all of our kitchen stuff, clothes, linens, and "doo-dads", not to mention books, CDs, DVDs. Basically our entire house from back home minus the electronics and some of the cheaper pieces of furniture.

It cost us about USD $5000 but our company reimbursed us. If we had been given an allowance instead, we would've seriously considered selling everything and buying it all new here (except for the sentimental-value stuff) because Australia has a pretty healthy furniture market here where you can buy entire rooms for several hundred dollars and sometimes you can furnish an entire HOUSE for $3000-$4000!

Still, I'm glad we brought our stuff over because now it feels more like home

As for consignment, I have no idea!
