Thanks for a great forum.

i have been reading day and night for a week.

I have an initial question, if anyone out there can give some advice.

I have a brother who married a lovely Oz girl a number of years ago and he says he is eligable to sponsor me Jan 09 as he is a resident then in Melbourne. Also the job i do seems to be needed and is on the jobs in demand list. Also there are loads of jobs on line and i think getting an employee sponsor would be favourable as they pay for some of the visa as i understand it.

Does anyone see what the easiest path would be time wise and money wise? My brother sponsorship or trying to get a good employer sponsorship?

Thanks guys.

Hi John1Owens,

We have recently received our visas and we were October on-line applications and were sponsored by my hubby's sister, which obviously is a great help indeed but doesn't speed up the process in any way, on-line application is quicker of course, but being sponsored by a family member is not.

From the research we done, and you have to do heaps of the stuff!, employer sponsorship is the quickest access you can get! but it is not easy to come by, so you have to way up those possibilities too, also we went in on a 176 visa, and the 175rs received their visas a helluva lot quicker too!!!

Hope this helps and anything else you'de like to know, fire away

Thanks for the info, looks like the employeer route will be difficult but more rewarding. I have one daughter and a partner, the work i do is paying around between $80k and $120k, with my current research i am unsure this wage will give me a similar life standard to what i have now - 3 bed detached, 2 cars etc.

What is your research showing is a 'good' wage?

Hi John1Owens,

Welcome to the forum.

Have you checked out the job websites in the "Please read" post? That may give you some idea of salaries here in Oz. I think a good wage will really depend on where you are moving to. A 'good wage' in SE South Australia will probably be a lot less than a 'good wage' in Sydney

Regards,
Karen

Hey john1owens, that would be classed as a good wage in Oz, but stay away from Sydney, like London or Dublin, where is your brother situated, i assume that's where you are headed?

Also you may not get paid as much as life in the UK but the quality of life is worth the pay cut

My brother is in Melbourne, he tells me Sydney is very London like for costs etc, so a suburb of Melbourne would be ideal, and of course i am going for the lifestyle first and the job second, however i think the market may favour my vocation at the minute and i might get the same as or maybe more than my current wage - well you can try !!!

Hi there John1owens,

With regards to get a sponsored visa be aware that you are tied to this company with their contract so if you have a 2 year contract with them or a five year one, you cannot break that contract.
We have a client who took a job in Sydney and its not in a good area, the company put him and his family up before they bought a place and it was awful. It just makes the start of your life here difficult, so what i am saying to you is really research the company and get someone you know to maybe visit the company, if not that than speak to a recruitment agency and ask them about the place of work.
The client im talking about is actually moving to the Gold Coast this year because he reckons you need a salary of over $100,000 to get along in Sydney??? food for thought maybe?

Hope that helps

Hi John,

If you haven't already, try sending a blank email to aspc.processing@immi.gov.au and get the processing times. I am in IT and applied firstly for Australian Computer Society approval which took 10 weeks to process before I applied for my visa - not that you necessarily need to do it that way, due to the lead time for processing. My timeline, I applied online for 175 visa on 30th Sept 2007, assigned case officer 24th Jan, accepted 6th May arriving 15th June.

One issue I had even though we applied online was police certificates taking 4 - 5 weeks to be attached to the application. Our case officer was requesting them and all I could do was say they are in the post but it left me really worried that I might need to apply for them again. Being in NZ and needing them from the UK is expensive and time-consuming (40 days not including postage)!! One piece of advice I will give you scan (in colour) and keep digital copies of everything you send for back-up purposes.

Good luck,
Pam
