Default supermarkets

hi all, may sound like a bit of a silly question but i was just wondering what the supermarkets are like in Brisbane and especially around the suburbs.

Are there any similar to Tesco for example or are they usually found in the BigW or kmart or whatever.

Hi Scottishcelts,

I can't answer the question about supermarkets in Brisbane but the ones we've been in are very different from the UK style of supermarket.

The ones here sell food but don't always sell anything else like clothes, CD's, electrical stuff or anything like that. Our ones don't have a pharmacy in them either but the local pharmacy stays open to 9pm here. Big W is the exception I think (I've only been in one once in Melbourne since our local one hasn't opened yet). Aldi seems to be the same as the UK in that it sells food and other bits & pieces but I'm not sure how common they are.

The supermarkets we have locally are Coles, Woolworths (not like Woolies in the UK and part of Sainsburys here), and IGA.

Regards,
Karen

Hi there,

According to my friend IGA and Woolworths seem to be the most prevalent and they are like Tesco (but like supermarkets in Australia, generally don't have the range that Tesco do).

Dolly

Hi Scottishcelts,

Coles is a big supermarket and the IGA can be quite small with less choice, but then there are super IGA's which I've been told are big (we don't have a super IGA down here). Woolworths is nothing like the Woolies in the UK though. These ones are just supermarkets and are pretty big too.

Regards,
Karen

Yep we haven't seen anything like the cheap plonk (wine for those of you who haven't heard the term ) you can buy in the UK. Aldi's have a cheap Moscato wine if you like it fairly sweet. We're not big wine drinkers (surprising they let us in the country really ) so it's not too big a problem for us.

Regards,
Karen

You can get just about everything you want but nothing like Tesco/ASDA etc I miss ASDA sssssooo much - infact I emailed them to tell them to get over here! I find it strange that they sell fruit only when its in season where as in the UK you can get anything all year round!! and only 1 selection of sausage roll, no pasties or ready meals, no fresh pizza oh and no rore bacon - its all kinda cured or something - like rubber! but its worth living here for!!

I haven't tried the bacon so I can't comment on that but can get the rest of that stuff at our local Coles supermarket. They have loads of ready meals, pasties and pies, and fresh pizza on the fresh food counter (with fresh meat, fish, salads etc.) Maybe the supermarkets vary depending in the area since Tescos does that too in the UK.

Karen
