Default We want to start again!!

Hi everyone!!! Me and my wife have thought of moving to Australia off and on for years and have finally decided that we want to go!! Things haven't worked out here in the UK the way that we wanted them to, basically we're bankrupt as of next week due to failing self employment and the credit crunch in general. Bankruptcy as far as I can make out does not affect our chances of moving to Australia. My wife is a staff nurse and has been for 8 years and apparently nurses are still in high demand so we're relying on her qualifications and experience for the visa. Our plan is to leave in 6-12 months ( as soon as our bankruptcy is discharged ) sell everything we have here and beg family for donations!!!!!! We have 2 boys aged 7 and 13. We want a better future for them as well as ourselves. Any advice on the best way to go would be very appreciated, do we just apply for visas and go? Is it worth my wife applying for jobs with nursing agencys before we go? Thanks in advance for any help!! Geoff

Hi Geoff:

Do a search on the forum, but I believe there is an amount of savings you need in your bank (with statements to back it up) for a family of four. I think it's also published somewhere on the Immi website. While the declaration of bankruptcy alone is not going to stop the visa, if you can't show sufficient savings to support the first few months in AU then that can get you knocked back.

That said nurses are still in demand so getting a sponsorship is key to getting in within a year. Also even when visa is granted you can do a 'validation visit' and then go back to the UK to do a proper move later when you are more prepared. It's still a substantial change and challenge.

Hi Geoff,

Please check out the cost of living sticky post too and do a search for the costs of childcare. We found that the cost of living here is quite high although we are in a regional area. I know that you've thought about this but you do need enough money to put down a rental bond and money to live on while you get yourself a job (assuming your wife finds one easily).

I'm not sure how much support you get from family for babysitting and childcare but you won't have any of that when you move if you don't have any family here. We don't have kids but from posts on the forum childcare costs can be quite high and you may not be eligible for any benefits when you move.

Regards,
Karen

Just a thought..

How about trying to get sponsorship? Nurses get sponsored fairly fast, that way your relocation cost, initial stay for a month will be taken care of.. (depends on how much you bargain and how desperately they want your wife in their organisation..)

First of all, sorry to hear about your situation...what sort of a business was it? I'd say, make sure you've thought long and hard about why you want to come to Oz. Does it seem like a good place to run to or have you visited before and loved it? I meet plenty who end up HATING it (me included!). However, if you've looked at all the options and are determined to come, then yes, cost of living has gone bonkers in the last couple of years, but generally most say they're better off financially here. I'm a nurse myself and there's loads of agency work, full-time positions are harder to find in some Area Health Districts. Contacting some agencies in advance is a good idea and will save time and you could email documents over in advance.

Just 'getting a Visa' isn't as easy as it sounds for Australia - it's one of the hardest countries to get into. Your wife would probably be OK, but depends what work you do. Good luck!

Treat Australia as a new adventure for your family. In many cases though your life will not be better off here. Don't think of Australia as the promised land because its not. Its very hard to live here if you don't have loads of money.

No they only want skills where there is a demand as there are many jobs that Australians won't do. They also want you to prop up the housing sector. Try doing this to the UK, USA, Canada SIngapore many people have no chance at migrating to these countries.

Hi, we are about to make that move as well next year. Many of our friends who are nurses went and never wanna come back. I think it's a matter of opinion. There is an agency I found that is prepared to pay for all the relocation expences like airfairs for your family and I think first 6 weeks of rent. You will get so called sponsorship visa with them and you hyave to then work for them for at least 2 years. The agency is called Ramsay healthcare, find them on Google and have a look at what they offer. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, cheer up and think positively. Because someone is not happy in Oz doesn't mean that you will feel the same way. Every country has it's issues, but Australia at least got the weather ;-D
