Red face Money when moving...

Hi there

Just wondering how much money you intend to bring when you are moving downunder ?
I am hoping that we can bring aus$20K, beside our furnitures which we will ship (most of them), will that be enough to rent a house and buy a car ?

Kind regards Mette

Hi Mette,

Since we were moving over from the UK permanently we had already set up bank accounts in Australia and transferred most of our money when we moved.

If you look in the "Please read...." post that has links to property websites so that you can see the rental prices of what you are looking to rent. That may also say what the rental bond will be - if not assume at least 1 months rent.

If you check out Used Cars - New Cars - Search New & Used Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au that will give you idea of car prices where you are moving to. In South Australia the price on the car is not the "on the road" price since there is stamp duty and delivery on top. This may be the case where you are moving to - I'm not sure. You may not get a credit card immediately (it depends on the bank and your job situation) so you may have to pay for the car in cash (unless you have transferred money over to a bank account).

Hope that helps,
Karen

Dear Karen

Thank you for your reply, I will take a lookfor how much the bond for rental is and also for a used car.

I think we should be able to find a cheap car, in Denmark cars ahe 185% taxes on the real price so that's a different.
In these days my husband is considering to get a new and better paid job as an consultant before we get the Visa, if he gets that that could maybe give 50 og maybe even 100% more than he makes now.

How is it possible to make a bankaccount before moving ?

- Mette

We managed to do this before we moved here because we had a property here even though we didn't live here. Most of the main banks have internet accounts so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to do it before you move over.

If you check out the websites of some of the banks here that may tell you more:
St George (our bank)
NAB
ANZ
Westpac
Commonwealth bank

They are some of the main banks that come to mind.

Regards,
Karen
