As far as I can see, the rules are for each individual State rather then the country itself. This is the only website I could find with actual requirements (Western Australia). Department for Child Protection - Who can adopt Dolly |

Adopting an Australian child may never eventuate...we had family waiting for YEARS
I believe when they 1st applied, the number of children given up for adoption in 1 state was 5 for the whole year...with thousands waiting. In the end, my family adopted from outside the country. Also, to even adopt an aboriginal child, you also must have aboriginal heritage. I would dare say you would need to be a citizen to even foster children in Australia |

Sadly, you are right. My sister and her husband have been trying to adopt for a long time. It is a hard process, and costly too.
They too have resorted to adopting from another country (which is still not easy or cheap). But, you dont know until you try!!! Good luck. |

Hi Everyone
Thanks for all your advise. We have been away for a few days, so sorry I havent replied sooner Dolly I will have a look at that website thanks for that. I know adoption isnt easy whatever country you live in but I didnt realise that it is nearly impossible in Aus. But in saying that I think thats a good thing that there are not lot of children waiting to be adopted. Maybe we should start looking to adopt from another country. We are happy to foster well I say we I mean hubby is, the only thing that puts me off fostering is getting attached to the child and then having to say good bye to them that would be very difficult. Has anyone fostered before? Remi x |
