Question Suburbs and School in Brisbane

Hello All,

I've seem that this forum is very helpful.

I need some help with suburbs and schools in Brisbane. We are looking for a middle school (6th grade) and public school, people have told me that education public system in Australia is very well. What do you think?

About the suburbs the only thing that I know is that my office is at Salisbury, so what do you think could be the best option for me.

We want to know first the best school and then we search for a house close to the school.

We are moving from USA but originally we are from Venezuela.

Thanks in advance
Rigo & Karla

Hi Rigo & Karla,

If you search through the threads you'll find the people who are looking at or already living in Brisbane. If you contact them they may be able to help you.

I'm in South Australia and I don't have any personal experience of Brissie.

Regards,
Karen

Hi there Rigo & Karla,

Check out these websites:

(lots of info including real estate/school system/employment. Look at the 'moving here' link also).

Brisbane - School information - ourbrisbane.com

I always found looking at online newspapers gave an insight into what was going on in the State. It has jobs/real estate/cars/local news/national news etc. Here's a link for The Brisbane Times Brisbane Times - For local Brisbane News, World News & Breaking News in Queensland, Australia

Default Suburbs & school in Brisbane

Hi Rigo & Karla,

I live in Brisbane and have friends who live in Salisbury. In terms of schools, the state school system in Queensland (Brisbane is the capital of Queensland) is excellent. However, you will find that resources at state schools differ between suburbs, i.e. the schools in wealthier suburbs tend to be better resourced because local families can afford to donate more to the schools. Primary schools generally extend from Prep through to Grade 7. Highschools then run from Grade 8 to Grade 12. However, in the private system, some schools have now introduced a 'middle school', which confuses things a bit. If you are interested in private schools, a lot of the private schools in Brisbane are single sex (all boys or all girls). However, there is an excellent co-educational (boys and girls) private school in Indooroopilly called St Peters Lutheran College. I know that they have a middle school. It is expensive though (approx $9000 a year). In contrast, a state school will only cost you a couple of hundred dollars a year. A lot of people send their children to a state school to year 7, then switch to a private school. My children attend Indooroopilly State School and we are VERY happy with this. Indooroopilly is a lovely suburb and you could easily commute to work at Salisbury (you would be driving in the opposite direction to most of the traffic). However, it is more expensive to rent or buy in Indooroopilly. Some nice suburbs near Salisbury include Greenslopes, Yeronga, Annerley, Dutton Park (all of these are closer to the CBD, so you would be driving against the traffic during peak hour, which is good).

Salisbury is not a particularly wealthy area, although there are now a lot of houses being renovated there because it has traditionally been quite affordable. Unfortunately, housing prices have boomed in Brisbane in recent years, so it is difficult to buy anything for under $300,000. The best way to look at real estate prices is in the area is via a website called "realestate" (can't put the whole link yet so you might need to google "realestate australia" ).

The great thing about Salisbury is that it is on the train line. The public transport system in Brisbane is not great (it's clean and affordable, but the services are not as regular as they should be). Having said that, to be walking distance to a train station really opens up the city to you. I would consider looking at suburbs along the same train line as Salisbury - google "translink Brisbane".

I hope this helps.

Default Suburbs near Salisbury

Hi again Riga,

I've been thinking that some other nice suburbs that are closer to Salisbury than Indooroopilly and where I'm sure the state schools would be excellent include Graceville, Chelmer, Sherwood, Tennyson, Yeronga and Yeerongpilly.

Good luck!

Question Best private schools in Brisbane?

Dear all
Considering job offer in Brisbane, and have agreed between us that the 1st priority in moving is to find great schooling for our 3 kids. Now I have seen via several websites that *both* state and private schooling in Brisbane is high quality, but any suggestions which private schools are considered the 'best' - be that exam results, all round education, facilities or whatever? Single sex or co-ed, doesn't matter.

I believe Brisbane Grammar School has a good rep - any others?

Many thanks!
bfd

Default Private schools

Hi there,

Location is definitely an issue because the public transport system in Brisbane leaves a lot to be desired, so definitely look at schools in the areas you want to live. If you are living in the western suburbs, then St Peters Lutheran College is an excellent co-educational school (you don't have to be lutheran to go there). Everyone I have met who has graduated from St Peters has received an excellent education, as well as a well-rounded involvement in sports, the arts, etc.

Brisbane Grammar (all boys) and Brisbane Girls Grammar are both excellent non-denominational schools (also the most expensive in Brisbane).

For St Peters & Grammar, you will spend upwards of $10,000 a year on school fees.

Google 'private schools brisbane' for others.

There are lots of smaller and more affordable Catholic schools, so if this is your religion, they might be worth considering (google catholic schools brisbane).

Depending on what grades your children are in, I think state schools are an excellent (and much more affordable) option for primary school (Grades 1-7). Once again, if you are in the western suburbs Indooroopilly State School is quite a large state primary school (Prep-7) and has an excellent reputation for preparing children for highschool (especially if you are considering sending the children to a private high school). It is also a very multicultural school.

I hope this information helps.
