Default Driving on the Left or the Right?

Hi,

This might be a stupid question. Is the driver's side on the left or the right for Australia? Would it be a problem if I wanted to ship my car over from USA?

Thanks!

Shi

Hi Shi,

The drivers side is on the right (like the UK) so different to you in the USA.

Hi,

I'm from the US and here the Aussies drive on the left (they also prefer if everyone else drives on the left here too ). It didn't take long to get used to it. After 14 years of driving on the right, I managed immediately, felt more comfortable after a few days, and after about two weeks it felt intuitive.

The main difference is that the wipers and the turn signals are reversed on the wheel, so the first time I tried to signal a left turn, I turned on my windshield wipers LOL That takes a bit of getting used to.

We also bought an automatic which takes all the sting out of shifting gears with the left hand, and the foot pedals are in the same position; they're not reversed.

As for bringing over a car, it seems like overkill unless you have something really special like a '64 Corvette or something. Kaz brought her special car over; she can advise. If you're driving around in a Camry, sell the thing and buy one here! It'll be much much cheaper

Hi Shi,

As Tiffani mentioned I've been through this process and it's not worth it unless it's a really, really special car. And it's a really expensive car then there will be luxury car tax as well. If you do a search on Mustang you will find the post where I go into detail about what happened.

So although we moved from the UK it was (and still is at present) a left hand drive Mustang in a right hand drive Australia.

Regards,
Karen

Thanks ladies for the info! It's my hubby's car. It's not something super special (at least I don't think), but of course he feels differently. But this is all good info to know so now I am starting to get a grasp of what I can start to expect. Thanks again guys!
