Question Cost of getting to Oz ? :)

Hi,

Would anyone be able to give us rough figures of how much it cost to get to oz ? If we were going to move out would it be cheaper for us to sell some of our bigger items & start a fresh. Or have it shipped over ?

Regards Lisa1802

Hi Lisa,

It really depends on your shipping company, what you are shipping out, where you are shipping it from and to etc. It depends on how new your stuff is whether you want to bring it with you. We hadn't bought anything new in ages so we gave most of it away (charity shops and freecycle) and bought things new here.

We shipped a 40 ft container from UK (just North of London) to Melbourne and then to SE South Australia and that was around 6,000 GBP. I think the marine insurance was on top of that. We had a big container because we brought our Mustang over.

It can also be cheaper if you share a container but that can also take longer.

Regards,
Karen

Hi there,

Off the top of my head, these are the figures we paid:

Agent (skills assessment and main application) £3.5K
Shipping £4K
Shipping dog £2.2K
Flights £2.5K

Whether you ship all your stuff over or buy new here is a matter of personal choice. If you have the money after forking out all of the above, then to be able to buy new once over here would be nice. We shipped most of our stuff over and are renewing as we go along.

But remember, you'll have starting up costs when you get to Australia. You'll probably have car hire until you buy your own and a rental deposit. If you have school age children you have book fees/school fees/uniform to buy.

Dolly

My boyfriend's company was willing to pay for us to ship our stuff out here, but they wouldn't just give us an allowance to buy things when we arrived. I kind of wish they had because the shipping company really gave us the run-around as far as the timing of our stuff arriving was concerned (still waiting on it.. first ETA was 25 mar, then it became 26 apr, now it's 12 may). It cost about US$5000 to ship slightly less than a 3 bedroom house. Now with all these specials that furniture companies are having here, you can furnish a home for $2000-$3000 in some package deals so it would've been better to sell our big stuff and buy it here. Also, unlike the US, a lot of furniture here is solid wood, not MDF, so you get a much better quality product for a lower price.

The dog is gonna end up costing about $5000 when it's all said and done.

As far as I know, it's all ours. It's a long, convoluted story but basically we got screwed and there's not a dang thing anyone can do about it! yes, let's hope they stick to the 12th May. It looks positive because my container had to change ships in China, and the ship it's on now goes direct to Melbourne. It should be in transit as we speak. Then, once it arrives, it has to clear customs and then will be delivered to us. Hopefully we'll have it all within three weeks' time.
